Teardrop selling advice

Postby medel295 » Mon Jun 22, 2015 3:10 pm

Hello all,

I am interested in selling my most recently built teardrop in CO.

So, I need pricing advice.
I am pretty happy with the overall build quality. The teardrop is usable, and has already traveled long distances.

But, it is not without its quarks. I honestly do not have the interest in addressing the various quarks, I want it gone.

If I price the camper appropriately, is it ok to sell as is?
And, what might be a reasonable price?

I will add details later about the teardrop.

Thank you for your input

You can sell anything as is, but the price will drop depending on the issues. What are the issues?

From what I've noticed, here are the key pricing considerations
1) Size
2) Quality of build
3) Extra features ? and Details
4) Location

Depending on your buyers, there is a point where they need a loan so above that price people get a bit more picky about what they are paying for, and a bank might too. If your "quarks" are "must fix" items, then the price will need to be very low to attract someone who is willing to take them on. If they are just annoyances, then you might not have to drop the price too much.

This teardrops is 5' wide inside and accommodate a queen size house mattress. The body is 8' long.

The build quality is pretty good in my opinion. The camper is wired for electricity, but has no electronic accessories. There is a fantastic fan vent installed that has not even been used yet. The Axle is a torflex independent suspension.

My biggest problemm is driving "weatherproofness". The camper does great when stationary. When driving through heavy rain it takes on water.

Thoughts anyone ?

Without some pictures this is a pointless discussion

These two statements are contradictory

It sounds like the market for this camper is this: Somebody that A, want's a teardrop, and B, is handy enough to build a teardrop but is willing to fix the problems vs. start from scratch. And believes the problems are fixable or livable. That's an awful small market. Honestly, I think you'll be fortunate if you recover material costs.

How's the water getting in? Are you talking about the galley or the cabin?

Pictures showing build quality? Appointments & nice touches you did? I'd like to know more about it from what you've said, so please post a few pictures so we can see what's there.

Thank you everyone for your responses so far.

Here are some pics!

I am quite happy with my overall appearance. It pulls sooooper smooth going down the road.

The galley is simple and functional, although a bit heavy to lift. I wanted a nice big window to look out of and I am not a big fan of double door teardrops so I built it as such.

These pics will not give you all the nitty gritty details. But what impression do you get from the overall appearance?

Here is the view looking out the big window.

The inside cabinet is made of a mix of maple and cherry. The galley cabinets are a mix of walnut, maple, and cherry. I mixed the woods deliberately to get a look I was going for.

And I used all- thread with the inside cabinet for a modern/ industrialish look.

My leaking issues are in the front where the roof meets the frame, and at the door.

I hope to remedy the door leakage with a vertical L channel in front of the leading edge of the door. At the front, I think I will add sealant and a piece of flat stock to hold the metal roofing to the sheathing underneath.

Again, any thoughts anyone?

 A couple of thoughts. First, you're not going to get top dollar for your Tear. Don't expect a great price.

Are you looking for a do-over? Settle on a bottom line price you'll accept, and if you can't get it, keep the frame and start over.

I'm going to pass on guessing a good asking price. Something over your bottom line.

Good luck!

Having looked at the pictures, I would try selling at about $2500.

I just bought a teardrop in Colorado for $4000. It is a little better than yours. I would say the earlier price of $2,500 is appropriate.

I love the design of your teardrop! If it needs some repair, you are limiting your potential market. I'd recommend taking the time to make the repairs so it will appeal to more people.

For various reasons, I have been thinking about selling our teardrop. I think a fair price for mine is $3000-3500 which is about half of the cost of materials to make it. This seems to be a pretty good way to get a market value for a teardrop.

Tom, I think you could tack on another $500 for being a TnTTT Hall of Famer. Otherwise, half of materials cost is probably a good rule of thumb.

Hi Friends, I have had to assess value to many different types of projects and TD fall into my basic pricing models. 1/3 materials, 2/3 labor. On more complicated work the material changes to %20 of the total with labor accounting for %80. At %33 materials a $2,000 investment is worth $6000, at %20 $10,000.
I am a professional artist and what is my time worth? At $20 an hour 100 hours (2 1/2 weeks) is worth $2,000. I don.t think so. $30 to $50 an hour OK. How artistic is my design value over the general value of every other TD? $0.000.
Aggie 77 your pics and advice over the years should help you command the highest price in a big ocean with lots of fish and few fisherpeople.
I often consider selling my first at a discount to finance my second bigger/ better TD but chring every time at the thought.
Enjoy, Chris
