Door holder, holding doors open? What's being used?

Postby SPLAT » Sat Feb 13, 2016 1:32 pm

Seems like we are stuck using the same stuff from the 70s when adding finishing touches. I hoped to find something nicer than what my parents trailer used when I was a kid.
This is what's available, but I don't like them....

I've been using magnetic door stops which are available at most home improvement stores.

The rubber on the ones you show wears out quickly where the magnetic ones don't.
I prefer the SOSS brand.

Being just a simple man, I use a sash cord with a loop at both ends, that hooks onto both open doors when wrapped around the front of the tear. Just took a couple of minutes and has lasted over 12 years, no sweat.

Maybe I am one of the few guys left that carry around a good selection of bungy cords and small ropes.

Slow, are you trying from a phone? If so, I cannot comment. But I find it very easy. from my iPad or big PC. What are your issues?

Ok...was going to offer a list of steps I use to get it done, but it sounds like you might have been using them anyway.

I'm making my own doors and skinning my teardrop with painted fiberglass over plywood. I may embed a neodymium disc magnet into the door frame and a steel screw/washer hidden under the fiberglassed skin of the teardrop. I'd place them so that the magnet lines up with the steel washer when the door was open.
:) No hardware would be visible.

Neat idea, however, how will you keep if from scuffing your finish?

My chromed steel door handles are similar to TriMark-60251CHR-Chrome-Door-Locks. I could embed the strong magnet in the side of the trailer where the door handle/lock touches the side(s) when fully opened. The door handles are flat and smooth on the outside without a sharp or concentrated impact point. So they may not scuff the sides. I'm using Brightside boat paint which resists scuffing and scratches. I can strengthen the fiberglass around the magnet with carbon fiber cloth. If needed I may also add something on the outside of the door handle, or near the magnet, to soften and/or absorb an impact. Not sure how much of this is really needed to protect the door and sides.

An embedded magnet will work fine, But attract all manner of magnetic dust & crap from the road.

So, dumb question. Why do you all leave your doors open? Where I am if we did that we'd be smacking skeeters all night...

I saw a clever way to hold a door open a crack. It consists of a hook on the outside and a screw eye on the inside. The hook and eye latches are for screen doors. Here it is holding my door open a crack.

Leave them open to dry them out. Or to organize. Doesn't take very long.

These work very well, from the land of Kiwi down-under.
