Stove vs griddle in the kitchen

Postby saltydawg » Mon Sep 07, 2020 11:24 am

Okay I when I camp I eat a lot of things like burgers. Eggs for breakfast etc. I do make things like soup and stews but I wondering if I should make the kitchen with a griddle and use my single burner butane stove for when I need a burner.

I know someone who has the Blackstone griddle and he loves it. I was thinking about using it as the primary cook surface. I wonder if it would do with a pot of stew on it.

I do have a cast iron griddle but that weights a lot more than the butane stove and it bigger so harder to carry.

What do you all think?

Our griddle is a non-stick aluminum. (Coghlan's Two Burner Non-Stick Camp Griddle)

Tony's Gally is going to be so much different on # 5

I am looking for just the right wok?
Single burner propane goes everywhere with me, will be in my table. but what else will depend.

It would be a real struggle to improve our galley.

For us, it’s about perfect.

Oh I have 2 14 cast iron skillets, a 10inch square griddle, and a 10x20 griddle. Having cast iron is not an issue... except weight.

I have used the blackstone griddle, it works great esp when cooking for more than 2.

this is one I like

If we have electric, we have an electric skillet, 2 small crockpots, small electric roaster and an electric coffee pot. If having to use propane, we get lazy and eat more sandwiches and quick type stuff. If it is in the spring or fall a fire pit is at the campsite, a lot of cooking will be done over the coals using dutch ovens, too hot here to have fires in the summer. In our 70's we like to make sure we have an electric power. With a skillet, crockpot and roaster, there is no limit on the types of foods that can be prepared.

I have a cast iron 2 sided griddle. I can put it on the charcoal grill, campfire, or on the electric burner. Universal and less to carry. They are made in many different sizes.

I use a Camp Chef Everest which weighs 12 lbs, plus a 10x20 cast iron griddle that weighs 14 lbs.

The 17in Blackstone is listed as weighing 25 lbs.

If you want a Blackstone, you should get one, I hear they are very nice. But I don't think weight really would be much of a factor.

Personally, I like the versatility of a camp stove and griddle.

Good grief. Our Couglans griddle weighs 1-3/4 pounds.

Griddles are the new popular fad so I have one, a Blackstone 17. My lovely wife sees to it that we obtain every new cooking device fad.
It's my theory that kitchen gadgets migrate like caribou from their birthplace in a mail order warehouse, then out across the landscape of North America, and finally to county landfills where they die. Many of them stop in our kitchen for a season or so in their migration. Juicers. Bread makers. Salad spinners. Air fryers. Hot pots. And now a Blackstone griddle.

We've used it on 3 or 4 trips and like it just fine.

Flat-top griddles are in every small restaurant as the main cooking tool (along with the deep fryer) so there's no question that they cook well. Ours cooks well too.
It's tempting to say it saves cleanup time but I'm not sure that's really true.
Instead of washing 2 skillets I clean one griddle by burning it off and scraping. It's no more cleaning hassle than a couple frying pans but maybe not any less trouble.

Most importantly the wife smiles when she uses her new griddle, which accomplishes my main mission in life.

Okay if you where building new, and you built both a stove and the griddle in to the kitchen, which do you think would get more use? Its not about clean up its about what I cook when camping and what I think I would use more. So your the perfect person to ask, as you have both.

Also, dont burn it off and scrape. While still hot poor a little water on it. use a spatula to push around a sponge with the green scrubby on the back. That should remove 95% of the previous meal, then scrape that in to the grease trap and dump. then rub with a little oil.
