Tent or Rv site?

Postby waterguy1111 » Sun Dec 20, 2020 9:16 am

I’m in the process of building my teardrop. When it comes to campsites would I be considered needing a tent site or an rv site and does it really matter?

In Florida State Parks they have tent only sites. We were there in January and reserved a tent only site at Koreshan SP. I heard people walking past complaining about our trailer, even though we had a tent and canopy, and about people sleeping in vans. Park personnel were cool though.

IMHO the designations of "tent" and "RV" sites has more to do with amenities than who/what should be alowed to occupy particular spaces

IIRC tent sites typically only have water and electricity at the most

while RV sites will also be supplied w/ a sewer dump

when using state and other private and government campgrounds i feel folks should look to and occupy the site offering no more than needed

TD and TTT campers typically utilize the public faciities which are commonly located more conveniently to the tent areas

in addition TD & TTT campers typically live outdoors like tenters rather than hole'd up in their motorized tin/fiberglass boxes

i personally vote for a tent site w/ water and electricity when available and even if the amenities aren't available for most of the units found on these pages

just this old man's 2¢ worth on the subject

I have seen the occasional campground that allows only tents on tent sites, but that's been rare.

Hmm, most of the tent sites I've camped in (in a tent), have a level pad for a tent, but not necessarily much for parking. Might be a pull over on the road a few feet from the site. May or may not be level. May even be across the access road from the site. Usually wouldn't be enough length for a teardrop and a truck.

Of course, that doesn't count the sites that advertise a short hike from the parking lot to the tent site.

If the CG site is on a cliff or steep hillside, it may be "tents only" because they don't want you ending up at the bottom! (Funny only if you stay up top.)

Too true! This was the view out the back of our tent at Ashley National Forest a few years ago

Not the site to pick if you toss and turn at night!

Tom

(Although, actually, this would be a good tent site for a teardrop, since the land is flat above the cliff.)

Some RV parks and CG give you the option of using a tent spot with a teardrop. Especially if that's all that is available.
I even had one who broke up a unused group site for us.

When we do use a Commercial CG tent site whenever possible! Whether or not you can will be how the CG defines you. It is a trailer, even though it's small...

Not such issues in the Forest!!! First choice is always boondock for us!

Most of the commercial CG's I have stayed in only ask how long your are. Then they ask if you need full hookup.

Just be straight with them. Know the length of your rig. Tell them you have a trailer and know how to back it up good. Tell them what you need for utitlies. Just let them decide.

If you say a tent site they might get a little miffed when you want to put a trailer there.

With very few exceptions everywhere we have camped you could never put a small camper in a tent spot. It's either a long walk through trails to the spot or there are physical barriers. The most extravagant restrooms are always located near the rv areas and if anything is available for tent sites it's usually very basic.

This seems opposite of some of what I read here but wanted to share. Admittedly when we tent camp we are typically looking for a hike in situation unless we are with another couple, then we typically tent in an Rv spot for water and electric plus facilities. It's hard to find another couple that will rough it. Seems many folks don't like camping and those that say they do like to car camp.
