The "magic" search button.

Postby Chris C » Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:53 pm

I've only been using computers for a couple of years now. I think I've learned a lot...... 8) ........but have a WHOLE lot more to learn. There are those of you, here in the forum, who I think have acheived "guru" status with your computer skills. (maybe you haven't, but it seems that way to me)

My problem: When I go to the search button on the site and type in "Group 27 batteries", I get 875 matches! :? I can read until I'm literally blue in the face and not come up with anything even remotely addressing Group 27 batteries. :x Needless to say, after an hour or so of reading, I give up. (far, far, far from reading all included in the 875 threads that supposedly matched my request) I know many people who can type something into a search box, hit the button, and find all the information they need. How do they do it? How would I find the information I'm seeking? Should I ask the search engine for something more or less specific?

Would someone help me out here...........without making fun of my inadequate skills, please!
Chris :D

How to use Search

Postby Guy » Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:23 pm

Dear Chris,

After you put group 27 batteries in the search box, you then have to check the line two rows below called "search for all terms". Otherwise you get every time the word "group" has appeared, plus every time "27" has appeared, and Plus every time batteries has appeared. That is why you get 875 posts and not ONE if you had checked the box.

Also sometimes you must vary the last part of the search box at the bottom, between Posts and Threads.

There is a difference if you input "Group 27 batteries", or Group 27 batteries the quotation marks make a big difference. You could also add a couple words (something you are specifically looking for), outside the quotation marks like: "Group 27 batteries" capacity.

I understand that, asianflava.............I just used the quotation marks to indicate exactly what I was putting in the search box...........but thanks for commenting.

Quotations do not apply to this Forum

Postby Guy » Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:33 pm

Dear Asianflava,

The use of quotation marks around a search phrase is of no use on this forum. This forum is PHP code and does not respond to typical Boolean search terms and language. The search language of PHP software is much more limited. If you put quotes around Group 27 Batteries, without clicking the box I described above, you will still get over 800 responses. You must check the "Search all terms" box

HOWEVER, if anyone wants to learn a great way to search this site it is to use Google site search. If you do not have a specific button for it on your browser than just do this

Open Google and in the search box write site:www.mikenchell.com followed by any words you want - even the use of Quotation marks.

Here are the results for a Google site search of the forum after putting in

site:www.mikenchell.com "group 27" batteries

Nice tutorial Guy...

While I've used that before, I'll bet there's lots of people here who haven't. This might have to become a search sticky! :o

Here is another one

Postby Guy » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:04 pm

Dear Mike,

Here is another one. Many people have difficulty finding and using the "View post since last visit" Button. Without you making that BIGGER and BOLDER here is a link I have on the link toolbar on my browser.

http://www.mikenchell.com/forums/search.php?search_id=newposts

This link I call Teardrops, and it bypasses the first screen. If I would normally have to logon (depending where I am) I still have to do it. However, it is a step saver and easily refreshes for longer periods online.

Google tips

Postby gman » Tue Mar 21, 2006 9:27 pm

P hrase your question in the form of an answer. So instead of typing, "What is the average rainfall in the Amazon basin?", you might get better results by typing "The average rainfall in the Amazon basin is."

§ T his is an old one, but very important: Put quotes around phrases that must be searched together. If you put quotes around "electric curtains," Google won't waste your time finding one set of Web pages containing the word "electric" and another set containing the word "curtains."

§ Similarly, put a hyphen right before any word you want screened out. If you're looking up dolphins, for example, you'll have to wade through a million Miami Dolphins pages unless you search for "dolphins - Miami."

§ Google is a global White Pages and Yellow Pages. Search for "phonebook:home depot norwalk , ct," Google instantly produces the address and phone number of the Norwalk Home Depot. This works with names ("phonebook:robert jones las vegas, NV") as well as businesses.

§ Don't put any space after "phonebook." And in all of the following examples, don't type the quotes I'm showing you here.

§ Google is a package tracker. Type a FedEx or UPS package number (just the digits); when you click Search, Google offers a link to its tracking information.

§ Google is a calculator. Type in an equation ("32+2345*3-234=").

§ Google is a units-of-measurement converter. Type "teaspoons in a gallon," for example, or "centimeters in a foot."

§ Google is a stock ticker. Type in AAPL or MSFT, for example, to see a link to the current Apple or Microsoft stock price, graphs, financial news and so on.

§ Google is an atlas. Type in an area code, like 212, to see a Mapquest map of the area.

§ Google is Wal-Mart's computer. Type in a UPC bar code number, such as "036000250015," to see the description of the product you've just "scanned in." (Thanks to the Google Blog,

http://google.blogspace.com , for this tip and the next couple.)

§ G oogle is an aviation buff. Type in a flight number like "United 22" for a link to a map of that flight's progress in the air. Or type in the tail number you see on an airplane for the full registration form for that plane.

§ Google is the Department of Motor Vehicles. Type in a VIN (vehicle identification number, which is etched onto a plate, usually on the door frame, of every car), like "JH4NA1157MT001832," to find out the car's year, make and model.

§ For hours of rainy-day entertainment, visit http://labs.google.com . Here, you'll find links to new, half-finished Google experiments-like Google Voice, in which you call (650) 623-6706, speak the words you want to search for and then open your browser to view the results. Disclaimer: It wasn't working when I tried it. (Ditto a lot of these experiments.)

Here is a great tool - the GOOGLE TOOLBAR

Postby Guy » Wed Mar 22, 2006 1:33 am

Dear All,

Here is a link to a really great tool that saves me a tremendous amount of time. It is Google's toolbar and it automatically loads onto your browser.

http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/index.html

This is the link to the Firefox version, however, on the right hand side under the big box is the link to the Internet Explorer version.

One on the most useful parts of the toolbar is the one that highlights on a page the search terms you are looking for. You do not even have to scroll down. There is a tab on the right hand side of the toolbar that has each word you were asking for. You click on it once and it takes you that word, click again on to the next time that word appears.

After installing it hold your left mouse button over the google symbol on the left. Go to option and choose away.

I even just upgraded mine, just now. It now has a spell check for button for use with this forum. NO MORE STUPID SPELLING ERRORS FROM ME.

Remember, it will not understand that installation=insulation so Gage is still dangerous, although I actually can understand him.
Regards,

Guy
