New Build "The Castaway"

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby MSG Hall » Thu Nov 29, 2007 10:25 am

that is one of the reasons I elected to put the door in the back. I am really not sure how I will be able to determine the best place for the axel. I won't be able to figure the weight loaded and unloaded until it's built and then it will be to late to change it. what I was thinking was to make the well for the wheel long enough to move the axel back of forward around 18" then cover the well from the outside with a facade. If anyone knows of another way, let me know...

I ain't even 100% that this is what I am going to do... it's just something I was thinking about.

The Castaway design looks nice. It should make a good toy hauler.

Just don't set out on any three-hour tours.

Will you be able to access the camper when the slide is not extended?

only about a one foot area will be able to be accessed through the door on one side and a hatch on the other. The Hatch will also be used for a small a/c unit when needed.

Yeah, but you can make some good guesses of where everything is going to go and use Andrews axle positioning spreadsheet to get a better idea of where the axle should be.

I used it when I was thinking about moving the axle on my HF trailer and it was pretty accurate.

I have been thinking about something similar. I need one for my ATV as well and two beds... ain't that I'm homophobic, but when I go camping with a buddy, I want my own bed.

Your math is wrong here:

Your exterior rendering shows a 6' long cabin length, and your interior rendering shows 7'. And even at 7' long, how the hell are you going to fit the beds and those CHAIRS in there?

You gotta scrap those chairs.

Plus..and I'm not homophobic either...but your design is still narrow enough for your camping buddy to reach over and touch your pee pee, if he's so inclined.

Use the Steve Wolverton definition of camping buddy and you don't need to worry about the homophobia...

Beds are 7' long, so like Ira said, get rid of them chairs... :o

BTW, IRA's definition of camping buddy is even better than Steve's.

you are absolutely right about my measurements, don't know how I did that...

anyway, about the hunting buddy thing, I know it will be close, but still two beds are better than one. ;)

you are right, I'll just loose the chairs...

question... how shallow can you make a galley? I could put one on the front and have a porch ti stand on...

As I was finishing the Flying Hippo and thinking about Flying Hippo Baby. Just came up that name. I thought. "Why build the tear with a galley? I am towing it with either a pickup or an SUV. Shorten up the tear, no galley. Carry the cooking stuff in the TV and then if you are on a day trip with just the TV, you have the galley with you." So as I am thinking now build #2 will be just long enough for the bed. I like the idea of have less of a side profile. I don't like looking in the mirrors and see the trailer hangin about a foot to one side in a side wind. That was an interesting day.

Mines being built with a full size bed for me and my wife. As for the buddies they can either sleep on the floor or in a tent.
