My 2 cents Randy

The MREs are designed to be "low residue" as a high fiber meal might be "inconvenient " in a combat situation. They don't actually put a bowel inhibitor in them. They are considerably improved over the original ones, as far as selection, taste and accessories. I just heard that they have a prototype pizza MRE coming out. We used to take the components and make some pretty decent meals out in the field. You could crush up the dehydrate pork and beef patties, add the beans from the beans and hot dog meal, use the Tabasco and catsup and you have a decent chili.

The crackers could be repurposed as shower tiles, with cheese spread grout. :FNP

I have eaten them a bunch backpacking also. Will eat most anything when you are at least a day and two mountain ranges from civilization.

But they are not all that bad.

To each his own, I suppose.

MRE's, military and civilian varieties, serve a purpose. However, we'll do darn near anything to avoid needing to eat them. They are a god send of sorts to backpackers, military and civilian. If a hurricane, tornado, flood or something hits and keeps me from all other food, or keeps that food from us, then we'll eat them. Not before. There are assorted ones in the barn at the cabin and here in the store room off the garage. I have a list of what's where and the dates. Every so often I give the older ones away and replace with newer stock. Can't remember the last time we actually ate one. Years ago when we backcounty hiked. ?/

Don't forget your rock, or something.
The pork rib patty entre was my favorite, it was so good the Army had to pack it with the worst sides so that Soldiers wouldn't fight over it.

There isn't an inhibitor, just most people neglect to drink the 1L of water they're supposed to with each MRE consumed and stay hydrated throughout the day. If you keep up with the water consumption, you won't get blocked up.
