Picking those locks was no big deal at all for the locksmith. I'm glad I'm not a locksmith though. . . I couldn't handle the temptation to open things without being asked first.

I have a set, my wife has a set. Once, we went camping without either set. The doors to the cabin were not locked, so that was no big deal. The hatch, however, was. I have it (temprarily for the last 18 months) secured with 2 hasps that are screwed into the sides, and are bent around the hatch to the staple, then locked with 2 keyed alike Master locks. 5 minutes later and with the assistance of a Phillips screwdriver, I had my hatch open. It was a pain having to screw and unscrew it all week!

Now I make certain both sets travel with us!
God Bless

You need a set of keys hidden somewhere on (or under) your tear. I was WAY out in the woods with my truck, dog, and girlfriend. We left the dog in the truck cab, and took a short walk. While we were gone, only about 15 minutes, the dog somehow stepped on the electric door lock switch, and in just one move, locked herself in, locked the truck up (with keys inside), and locked us out. Even with a cell phone, no locksmith could have found us, or even reached us, where we were. We tried everything. Long story short, we smashed a window to get the dog, the keys, and get home. cost to repair- over two hundred dollars, cash. Insurance said I willfully broke the window, and they wouldn't pay.............
After that episode, I hid keys on everything I own, right down to the riding lawnmower.

One trick I have always used on all of my vehicles including my teardrop now, is take some solid electrical wire (the type you wire a house with, and leave the insulation on it) and wire a spare key underneath to the frame preferably to the top out of site. The wire won't corrode and fall of in your lifetime, and takes no pliers or tools to get off. The wire is pliable enough to twist off by hand and you know right where it's at.

We do have an extra set of keys, all ten of them. There are a couple for cable locks.

I keep an extra key to my trailer readily accessible and always have a spare key to my pickup in my billfold. When I was at Glacier National Park a couple of years ago I accidentally locked my pickup with the keys inside. Without the key in my billfold I would have had a very long wait for a locksmith, not to mention a very expensive bill. Always, always have extra keys with you at all times.

I have two complete sets of keys that fit my TD doors, the padlocks that I use for the hitch coupler, and my security chains for the wheels. Both sets are normally stored in my "trailer" tool box when I'm not using the TD or my utility trailers (the tool box has all the tools needed to do any work on my trailers from changing tires to changing hitch balls). Anytime I use one of my trailers, I take one set of keys and attach them to my personal key ring with a small carabiner and the other set remains in the tool box in the back of my TV (I also have a spare key for the TV hidden in a magnetic box). When I finish using the trailer the keys go back in the tool box on a shelf in the garage. I always know where they are and I can always get to my spare set.

The good news is that just about every RV compartment lock has a CH751 key and you can get replacements on eBay:

eBay Linky

The bad news is that just about every RV compartment lock has a CH751 key. Check your key, I have about a half dozen spares if it says CH751.

True Bruce!... I went to the RV dealers store about a year ago to get a little hatch door that I was going to cut into my 5th wheel, and I asked if it could be re-keyed to my key, easily by a locksmith, and he informed me that all of these RV keys are the same. So I started looking and paying attention and sure enough, have not run into a different one yet. So much for locking things up I guess.

There's an ad in Trailer Life that says: SECURITY ALERT Your RV is at risk if your storage compartment keys are CH-751. They'll sell you an identical lock assembly keyed slightly differently. That's nice, and it might stop someone who has a CH-751 from opening your compartment, but a real thief doesn't care if he/she damages your trailer because they are ripping you off anyway. As I have said before if they want it badly enough they can get it, all you can do is slow them down. BUT why make it easy?

Locks keep honest people honest and might make it a little inconvenient not the crook.

I keep an extra set in a magnetic holder under the trailer, because when you lock the door from the inside, it stays locked. My fear is getting out during the night to take a whiz, closing the door and locking myself out! :)

I got rid of the keyed lock to the baggage doors and replaced them with this:

But as mentioned, it only keeps honest people honest, a big screw driver is going to get a crook into your baggage door lickity split.
