Looks like there is more seam allowance if cut vertically.

You're right, Judy, vertical use of the fabric might be a better choice. I missed that~!

I love this fabric! A suggestion about quilts and seam lines, you can always have the same fabric with the lanterns spread further apart...especially if you have to order anyway!

Could just rotate the image 90* and railroad the pattern across (up) the roll and not have to worry about a seam at all!

Scott you can do that but you will want to keep all your grains going the same direction. If you get one part of a quilt going with and one going against the grain, you will get some warpage. That works out fine if you are doing a lot of cuts but if the quit is linear it is a whole n'other story.

 Actually you have a real good idea because then the grain will be going the length of the bed.

That's a fabric that would be good in a top of larger blocks. Something like a Yellow Brick Road, Just Can't Cut it, Show It Off, type of thing. The impact of the lanterns and uniqueness of the fabric will be lost if you hack it up into small pieces, and I wouldn't do the back with it....too much $$ for a back....just my opinion however. Doug

I agree with Doug. The easiest, of course, is just to use the whole fabric as a top or back, especially if you are not a quilter! So I can't help that I think like a quilter, so a whole cloth quilt never occurred to, and you would loose the specialness of the fabric. And as Doug said, it would be very expensive. Either using the lanterns in wide rows or columns, or in big blocks set off by cheaper solid and/or plaid fabrics would be quite striking. Even a very simple quilt, with just alternating BIG blocks of the lantern fabric and a solid would look fabulous. And finding a person to machine quilt it for you should be pretty easy. Any quilt shop would have a list of folks who do long-arm quilting for hire. Sorry, I haven't designed a quilt in a while and my thumb injury keeps me from doing my own work right now, so your new build has sparked the designer in me. Just ideas that might spark more ideas that fit with what you want and have access to the sewing skills you might need! 8)

How big are the lanterns? Might be able to applique them onto larger blocks?

edit: just looked at the original pic posted. The are smaller than I thought.

 whole cloth with bigger lanterns would certainly be beautiful. At least wide enough to cover most of the mattress...

You know - if may be cheating a little - but you could get the same look by designing a Quilted square the size you want - maybe four squares to give it some offset and have it sent to the printers. You'll need a little creativity to get it look right at 45" width of fabric, but it could be done - then send it to the quilters to a top stitch

Thinking something like this - Of course it would need to be cleaned up a bit ( color match the background and such) and maybe change the colors of the fabric a bit - but you get the idea

So cute. A lantern quilt would look great on a teardrop bed!
