Bill I made this rack a few years ago patterened it off of a old VW roof rack, total cost about 50 dollars bought everything at a big box store. What i did was measure the top of the teardrop and made the rack to fit, used 1 in galvanized pipe with a small pipe bender [cost about 15.00] and formed the pipe and welded it together, cut and stained the hardwood and attached them to the metal rack. took all of one afternoon

Here's mine. It's mostly 1/8" Baltic birch. The lid hinges forward.

That is a snappy idea! I'm gaining inspiration* from that!

I did the same thing, it's very handy. I got my box from Northern Tool.

Here is a pic of a retro cooler I used for a tongue box. I wanted more room in the back, so I used this to move the battery to the front.
(The other silver "box" is the AC enclosure.)

I like it - now I got to figure out mine and see if I can make one without welding.

Thanks

Mike youve got a beautiful roof rack there and of course a beauty of a tear. Im in the process of making a couple of roofracks for the Kit Tears. I found the galvanized piping and a reasonable priced hand bending tool as you pointed out. Ive also got Mahogony wood for the strips since I just love the color of the wood..

The welding part Im not real sure so I,ll ask anyways. Is that just normal welding somthing other than that such as Tig?

Also is the wood installed to it by stainless screws or?

Here is a European storage box used on many caravans. And set up on a Thule Bicycle rack. If I were to purchase one of these Id have it painted to match the color of the tear..

Image

And another version made by Thule which is quite impressive. You can buy it without the rack and I checked to see the possbility of installing it on the towbar itself and it will fit quite nicely. ;)

Also here is a video from Thule as how it is installed.

Hello Mike.. Can I ask you what that receiver looks like since we dont have such here..and how its installed even though I presume its welded? Also where can a rack like that be found at to carry the box?

I built the reciever out of square tubing and the bracket for under the trailer, used a Mig welder for the welding, as for the carrier rack i picked it up at a sporting goods store and i can not remember the manufacture,

As for the roof rack i used a Mig welder and i used small brackets that require 2 screws to hold the wood on, i thought about drilling holes in the pipe but decided against it because i was worried that to many holes would weaken the rack.

hope this helps
