I'm less concerned about locking it up like Ft. Knox when we camp. It's when it's sitting in our driveway when we're off to work that prompts me to lock it down.

I have to agree with you, home or off site storage sites would worry me most.

I do put a lock on my trailer. But I'm not really worried that someone would steal it.
Who could use it. It would stick out like a sore thumb.
Unless they ship it overseas.
Then maybe that out of state merchant marine that keeps on trying to scam me can buy it.
I have installed many LoJack systems into motorcycles. It's a good system, IMO.

However, it's FM radio based and only works in major metro areas that have receivers and police departments they have equipped with mobile receivers. That's the reason that it' not available nationwide. It would only work while the stolen trailer was still in the major metro city.

When my trailer gets stolen, my only wish will be that the jury on my murder trial will be made up from teardroppers, hot rodders, and motorcyclists. I'll never be convicted.

It would take about 5 minutes to remove the tires and put them in the trunk or bed of the tow vehicle. As a plus, if your trailer is up on jacks, it will be rock solid. Stealing a trailer w/o any wheels is gonna require a determined (and well prepared and equipped) thief. If they want your trailer that bad, there is virtually nothing you can do to stop them. Locks just keep honest people honest.

Cheers,

Gus

that is where you just start the tow vehicle in that situation and hit the highway again.

Slow.

 Gotta agree here. If my stuff isn't safe neither am I. Alarms work but insurance is better if you are that worried.

I have camped where I thought I was alone and found out later that other people thought the same thing but thats back when I was tenting it now I should have a trailer this year and that might be something different one of the ideas I was thinking of is using some kind of hidden tracking device or even a compartment to help prove ownership the alarm would be a good idea but still working out more details for that

Insurance is fairly cheap so I am going to insure mine for replacement cost. I will still lock the wheels but if they want it that bad, they can have it. I'll get me a new one.
Why couldn't you just have a removable coupler on the trailer tongue? Maybe just use a couple of drawbar pins to pull out and then the theif has nothing to hook up to....
Cuz' my 1948 hitch doesn't even have a standard coupler, much less a removable one :) But as someone else said, I'm more worried about it being stolen from my driveway than at a campground.

Not where I'm camping, but where I live (in da 'burbs of DC). Anything remotely interesting and not nailed down is gone. I have the boot lock only in my driveway.

Good point. I guess I'm very fortunate to have a garage that holds our two cars and the TD.

We always have our campsite clean and have things put away (both the wife and I are a bit OCD), but if we are away hiking or fishing, etc. in the campground vicinity we just leave everything as is (unless we are cooking the galley is closed). If we take the car somewhere, we put most things away, stow chairs etc under the picnic table, and sometimes lock the TD doors and hatch, but have never even considered a hitch lock or chains, etc.

Just like if you have a relationship with your neighbors at home, if you establish a friendship with your neighbor at a campground you can rely on one another to watch over each others spread.

My two most effective security measures:
1) camp in remote areas or low-population campgrounds away from big cities
2) befriend your neighbor.

If someone is so terribly worried that it could be stolen, you could make changes. That was my point. Personally, my insurance will cover mine and I would get a new one...I was just offering another solution..If it doesn't appeal to you then that's fine.

I'm not likely to camp somewhere that I am worried about my trailer being stolen and if it gets bad enough around home, well, home will be somewhere else ;)
