Little Guy prices

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby someones1 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:09 am

07rascal, that helps a lot, and was really exactly what I was looking for -- someone willing to tell how much they paid under MSRP. :)

roadmaven, I've run across those but I can't imagine that paying the delivery cost to SC would be worth the discount.

As I've said, I'm going to be towing this to Alaska in May. I have a V6 Saturn Vue which has plenty of towing capacity, but with how expensive gas is expected to get -- coupled with how much more expensive it is in the Great Northwest anyway -- I'm trying to keep it all as light as possible. It is VERY feasible for gas to be up to $7 a gallon on the run through there.

Thanks again to everyone for their comments and experiences!

It may make sense to pick one up directly from Little Guy in Ohio -- in route to Alaska.

This has actually crossed my mind, but if you look at a map, Ohio is actually pretty far out of the way for that drive. Add in the fact that they're on the east side of Ohio and it makes it just a little bit worse. I'm gonna keep this in mind but I don't think it's very feasible. Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

And I think I paid $4100 for mine, then had to pay the sales tax to register it in my state. It is a 2009 and had sat in their lot a while. I thought it was a good buy. They threw in the sleeping bags and pillows that were used for the display.

Thanks, Cliff. I had seen this and have made contact with the guy. He's still about 3 hours from me, though, and I'm heading to the Subaru dealer this week to see what they could do first.

Listen to someone who learnt the hard way. Research before you buy. I started out with the 4 wide and felt it was too small for my husband and myself. Traded it back in for the 5 wide. I'm happy with this size. Also upgraded for the electric and TV and fan. Wouldn't be happy without the fan and electric. Not something I could have added to it. Also paid way too much. Didn't have a clue as to what they cost. I'm usually a very smart shopper. My dealer is still holding all of the trailers he bought to sale. You can get some wonderful deals if you check for a used one that wasn't what someone wanted. Other than paying too much, I love mine. Pulls well, not too large for me to handle alone. Found it warm when very cold outside. Slept in the summer with just the fan pulling the night air through comfortable. (I was at the beach though. ) Not everyone is up to building one. Good luck.

I know this is probably a stupid questions but...have you looked into renting one for your trip? It may be possible to do and try out the options. Then you could look into purchasing at your leisure. Just a thought.

Best,

It has crossed my mind, but I wasn't aware of anyone that does long-term teardrop rentals (May-September) for a decent price. Ideas?

Can't help with the haggling, but what 'canned o minimum' said for weight is about right on.

Mine is a 2007 4 wide platform. The platform and related frame might contribute to some disparity in listed weights. It's also a 'Deluxe', although I don't know the implications of that. It was bare-bones -- 3 lights requiring 'AA' batteries, etc. -- until I began tweaking it.

I think one of the models you mentioned is the shell or totally un-appointed one? If so, that was introduced later, and I'm sure removing the galley <sigh>, cabinets, carpeting, and whatever else could bring the weight down. Mine also came with a spare wheel/tire, and mount (seen in background here), so don't know whether that is added to the weight sticker as shipped, or whether the 'core' is 760 lbs before options are added on.

While this hasn't been mentioned, I keep thinking about your proposed trip. I don't know about the Alcan and other areas you may go, but in addition to other decisions, I think I would consider frame strength and integrity, and the type of suspension. I suppose you'd like bring the same trailer back as the one you left with. In terms of the frame, wheel and tire size, I think the Little Guy probably over-qualifies. However, while the torsion axle is touted as being a good thing, it (they - regardless of manufacturer) also tend to be bouncy.

I'm only mentioning this for your consideration. Depending on how it's packed, it might be a non-issue.

Oh, almost forgot ...
