So, Miriam, where are you going to go? Can't outrun the wind. The "cloud" is moving from west to east and the fallout area is going to be large and will increase as the days pass. The "danger" will continue to decline as the fallout are expands. Just go catch a fish or two.

Back in the '60s when I was in the AF they checked my dosimeter and told me I was a dead man walking. Gee, what was I to do? I was already exposed to a lethal dose radiation. I'm still alive and well. Oh, BTW, it was just an exercise.

Good point Bob....this is a perfect opportunity for someone to cook up something like a "home radiation detection kit" just a bunch of radiation badges and start marketing it. Like Rahm Emanuel says: never let a good crisis go to waste! Doug

Back in 1962 I was on a submarine stationed in Hawaii first cruise I went on was to watch and be part of a nuclear bomb drop.

We were issued dosimeters had to sit on the deck (floor) and brace ourselves from the shock.

we being the ginny-pigs were told to go up on deck (roof) to see the mushroom cloud, like a fool I followed the crowd.

It does come in handy now, I haven't had to buy a flashlight in 40+ years.

parts of this story are true parts are not.

Ummm I meant for the event of a normal disaster! Wasn't just talking about just Japan guys. The TV is just full of how really upset you guys are and I am thinking you are compensating for all that fear. Now I know we have all had our aluminum hats for years, but actually I think mine is tinfoil.

It seems to me that the American media tend to try to make every world incident all about us and how we are panicked. I don't know but one person who was concerned and she is home bound. The media is where she gets most of her info...

You hit the nail on the head, Miriam. It is the news media that has to find someone, anyone that is scared and put that on the news. You will never see them finding one person or ten that says they are not worried and are going on with life. No news in that. Gotta glue the viewer to the TV and their channel. I think I knew that you were talking about more than the Japan problem. We have a lot more pressing problems here than a little radiation floating over us.

I've wondered about that. With Japan being roughly 6000 miles away, is there any risk?

Maybe I should wrap the Giant Teardrop in foil, just in case, eh? :?

Mike...

6418 miles (10329 km)

Distance between Detroit, Michigan, United States and Tokyo, Japan 6418 miles (10329 km) (5577 nautical miles)

Have beer in the fridge and my employer on speed dial, if the big one comes I want to leave a message and tell them a thing or two.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Bits and parts have been talked about for a wile. Joking about and poking fun is a good thing, it at times relives what we are worried about or do not want to address.
I live in the land of no rocks and lots of bridges. If the earth moves I will be where I am at. I have stocked some food and a few cases of water 10 gal of gas in cans ready to go. Most things that may happen I and all would be able to travel in one direction or another to get out of it. We camp and go camping for weekends with only what we take with us (dry camping). Government has said be ready for 72 hours and they will be there. Well do not plan on it (Gulf Coast). They have started hinting to plan on two weeks now. Another thing make sure you plan and store has what Planovet`s cat has not on his head but to his left. People will get crazy so not only have it know how and when to use it.

Other than preparing for a physical disaster of a week or so (earthquake- power outage- flood- tornado- wild fire ( I live in wild fire zone)) life goes on pretty much the same for me ....

The nuclear situation in Japan is very unique, as mentioned above "the perfect storm" and I believe there design criteria and experience in this stuff will prevail and the danger through real will not be wide spread, I think there is a lot of media hype going on at the moment because everyone is scared to death (no pun) about the word "nuclear".... This will probable set back nuclear industry another 30 years like "three mile island" did for nuclear industry in US, so goes our hope for clean abundant electrical power in future....

There has been only one disaster of any significance and that was Chernoble (Russia) and all the three eyed frogs and 10's of thousands of deaths never happened....

Dale

Well, there may be something to that. If those had been coal plants, that tsunami would have had a very different effect. Either way the power would be out but just which one is more hazardous now?

Weather Underground...

Postby JuneBug » Tue Mar 15, 2011 5:12 pm

Jeff Masters, who founded the Weather Underground Web site, is addressing the issue of wind borne contamination from the power plants in Japan in today's blog:
Rain in Japan threatens to contaminate ground with radioactivity He is referring to the possibility of contamination in Japan, based on the current weather pattern there.

Yesterday's blog addresses Radiation from Japan not likely to harm North America and shows projected air flows.

Hey slow cowboy.....I heard last week that Wyoming is the second happiest state after Hawaii . Today I heard you have the cheapest gas in the country. So you people must have something going for you out there.

As for being prepared for a disaster, not really. We have a house out in farm land. But I don't have anything special put away. I'm not really worried about doomsday or a natural disaster. The media spends most of it's time preaching fear. At my age I don't by into much of it. They have 24 hours a day to fill us full of crap. Just report the news don't make it!

Oh yea, Buy seeds, the unaltered ones if your really worried. If things do ever go to complete hell they will be the new currency.
