General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

The radioactive cloud hit us, too. It has been sunny and 80 degrees here. I have thrown caution to the wind and detailed my car and have been cooking outdoors. I hope I don't die from all that outdoor activity.

Duck & Cover

Postby Engineer Guy » Sun Mar 20, 2011 9:06 am

A few 'indicators' of the mindset back then are linked below.

The old CD 'Duck & Cover' Films popped into my head. Back then, 'CD' meant 'Civil Defense'. There were too many campy Films on the Search Results Page below to pick any single one.

I remember well the Drills in ~4th Grade to practice getting under our School Desks.

One Housing Subdivision in the Denver Suburb of Arvada offered the option back then of having an austere Bomb Shelter built-in under the Garage Floor.

For some reason I don't remember any duck and cover drills. Maybe they figured we lived in an area that would not be targeted or it was pretty useless anyway. Or I just forgot them. I sure do remember the Cuban missile crisis. And I remember people talking about building bomb shelters but I do not know of any being built.

I remember looking at houses with mom and dad back about '60 and it was a big selling feature to get a bomb shelter. Some came equipped with water tanks, bunks, and an air raid siren. I managed to turn the crank on one and got clobbered for doing it. Parents would clobber you back then...Doug
