Custom Graphics

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Having painted many custom vans and murals in the "old days" , yes there's still a few of us around , but from this end it appears everyone wants the vinyl graphics instead ... :o

Same for Art ... now everybody just prints pictures off the internet ... and live in houses with bare walls ...

Artists and sign painters are now like dinosaurs, a thing of the past ... mediocrity and conformity rules ... As you might be able to tell , I HATE cookie cutter graphics ... They all look the same , and I don't get any work ... sound familiar ... ? Just wait till the Chinese start making graphics ... they'll put everybody out of business.. and be cheap enough as to be irresistible ... Just like everything at the Wal Mart ... and it looks it ...

If I was back in New Orleans, you'd have a job because you're not just a thing of the past, you're already exstinct. I'd much rather have the real deal myself as long as I could afford it.

Yep, I, now am an "EX" ... Retired anyway ... and I never charged people a fortune for the art work I did , just expected a "days pay for a days work "... An honorable tradition long since abandoned since the advent of bean counters , profiteers , CEOs, and Art dealers (the worst sort of Muggles )

Come on down , the Seafood's Fine now and I'd still like to do a bit of decorative work ... aint' dead yet, aint' stuffed and propped up in the corner .... yet ...

Care to offer a ballpark estimate to have the same graphic hand painted?

What Graphic, the leaf ??? That's really simple , maybe half a day ... + materials ... or about a "Croaker" .. that's for both sides and schmaybe' a little one on the galley hatch , just in case ... The lettering , not more than a hour or two including a coffee break and a smoke ...

Something extremely detailed in a large size might take a day or two , per side ... Just more time to get it right ...

Feel free to PM with an estimate...................it's been awhile since I partied in the 'Big Easy' for a day or two.

I once partied there for six months while on recruiting duty. I've got a scar to remind me from eating Red Beans and Rice.

BTW, if I decide to paint my TD it to match my truck, I'd want the second picture. My truck is metallic blue and I'd have to get permission from the artist also.

Those are compelling images of Vietnam and would be interesting illustrations on a teardrop for sure. You must be a wizard GWP, I mean a real pro of course. I apprenticed in a sign shop for a month or so then found a job as an art director; better pay no weather issues.

Back in the day I did custom hand lettering for advertising agencies and clients all the time. Although I never did any direct hand lettering on vehicles. Every art director wanted the look and feel of the real deal for splash art and mastheads. Now many young designers (at least the muggles) don't even know that it can be done by hand. For me it was always a matter of what best fits the design, a font or something hand lettered. If the design is very mechanical looking a font may suit it best. If it needs to have a lot of character then there's nothing like the human hand.

For my TD designs I've decided to use vinyl from a local printer I've worked with for years. If I had the big bucks I'd have the door art cast and chromed...maybe someday...

Cheers,

Dave

Ed, Don't think you'd need permission from the Artist , to put it on your TD... as long as he was acknowledged as the originator... What we do is sign it "after.." or "in the manner of " But if you're going to sell them , well that's another story ... I'm sure Frank Frazetta wasn't asked permission every time someone painted his images on a van or truck ... They were Very popular in the late 70s into the 80's for such applications
I think the second pic would be COOL !!! Fun to do too , cause I Love all flying thingies ...

Now me being somewhat eccentric , and you living somewhere in the vicinity of Chi town , I may request you bring a Pizza... Mmmmmm!!!

I still would like to get permission. Being into photography I know how important Rights are.
Before I get in touch with the artist, I'll first find out if I can afford either painted on or a graphic.

I'm no where near the Socialist City of Chicago. If I was I would have been long gone. I'm in very very very rural America where sunshine is pumped in and moonshine out, just across the Mississippi and up from St Louis. Home of the St Louis Browns.

That's an idea for the gallery door. I'm still thinking about the sides.

I thought about this along each side:

and this on the galley door or coming down from the top across the galley door:

I was with the 101st when I retired so thought about those as an connection.

GPW, the galley door is 53" side to side and 34" top to bottom.
