This talk of camping and bears coupled with Juneaudave's post reminded me of our trip to Alaska last year. We wanted to go hiking on some trails - but were warned not to because some bears were spotted on the same trail a day earlier. I thought, "how bad could it be - they are just wild animals and would probably run off at the first sight of a human." Evidently - what I thought I knew about bears wasn't exactly true. After repeated warning not go - I heeded the advice and went somewhere else. I finally figured out that if the locals who live there don't go because of bears, maybe I shouldn't as well!

Another camping trip was to a Texas State park know for it's cyprss bayou. we wanted to camp by the swamps edge. I asked if there was a REAL possibility that a gator could come up for "visit". We were told, YEs and it happened last night! So we found another spot a little bit futher away from the waters edge - let someone else deal with the gators!

So my advice is: if you don't want bears (or gators) in your camper, tent, teardrop - then DON'T go camping where they are present. Just makes sence don't it

We have Brown and Black bears around here ..... always check with locals and Rangers in the area before setting up in spot or park. They know if there has been or could be a problem with the local critters in you area that you may like to camp.

Fishing Bridge campground in yellowstone has been hard sided camper only for a long time. It's not so much about being out n the "wild" with the bears, but pretty much the opposite.

So many peole camping there leave their coolers out (Rangers make a nightly check of each campground) and try to purposely feed the bears. The campground has become a magnet for the bears, and throw in the fact it's near the water with all the fisherman etc...and you do have a lot of human and bear interactions.

I usually get out that way at least every other year and I've just started avoiding Yellowstone all together because of too high a concentration of idiots in a small space. Better to hike and camp in Teton national park or Bridger Teton National Forest, less people and better views in a lot of places.

We were allowed to camp in our teardrop in the Eagle Creek campground on the North Fork Shoshone River 44 miles west of Cody, WY, inside grizzly bear range in 2007. The campground host, a retired highway patrolman, made a point of visiting every campsite around mealtime to talk about bears and using the bear boxes. I guess we passed muster: we had already taken all foods and cosmetics out of the teardrop and put it all in the bearbox, except for the black pepper container, which I left next to the trailer's vent.

Ironically, we're having a bears-in-town problem this year and last in the northern Sierra Nevada. We have to keep garbage cans inside, and have to chide each neighbor who forgets and gets trashed, or it just gets worse. Last summer when we camped in a nearby national forest, I realized we had less chance of being raided by a bear out there than at home!

Hiker killed by a griz in Yellowstone yesterday. They haven't released any info as of yet. They did say "hiker", not sure if that will change later to backpacker or not.

it's been a long tine since someone was killed by a bear attack in Yellowstone.

It is far more common for tourists to be gored or rammed by Elk and Bison. I almost witnessed a Elk goring a lady one until the ranger stopped her. Dam rangers are always ruining my fun. I bet it could have made me alot of $ on America's funniest home videos.

up here in my neck of the woods we get bears dear moose and cougars all the time a lot of the animals only attack when they feel provoked you may think that what your doing is nonthreatening but you can't say for sure what the animals think ....... sorry about the rant ....... the worst that I ever heard there was this innocent bear that learned people ment food so it would do a little show for people to get food from the tourists well I guess it got to the point where it was getting more socialized to us when along comes this guy who thought wouldn't it be nice to get a picture of his four year old daughter with it so he got his camera ready smeared cheesewiz onto her hand steped back about ten feet to get the most perfect picture and then encouraged her on word . The bear attacked so fast that he had removed the little girls hand The father got charged with manslaughter but the legal system was nice enough to let him keep the picture of two of them.......... sorry again about the rant

We had a bear get into our TD up in the Sierras near Mono Hot Springs. He quickly ripped the door off and sniffed around. All that was in there was a bag of coffee beans. In short, bears always win. In Yosemite, they rip doors off cars. They are incredibly strong. They usually avoid people. We were sleeping in a cabin nearby when our TD got broke into.

A few years back I was in Yellowstone. Stopped at an outlook over a meadow. There was a ranger there watching a tourist about 100-200 yards away. He was about 10 feet from a buffalo taking pictures. Ranger looked at me from the corner of his eye. "I'll chew his ass out if he gets away". I just shook my head in agreement. Dumb tourist got away from the buffalo. But not the ranger.

Re Yellowstone bear attack: Radio report this morning said a couple came upon a female with two cubs (not clear if they were in back country or on developed paths). Mama did what mamas do and the man was killed.

As far as tent camping in Yellowstone, we were there three years ago. We camped at Fishing Bridge. There were tents, Aliners and people sleeping in their mini vans. I did see a wolf running through the campground around midnight. I felt bad for the tenters, we got about three inches of wet snow overnight.

I have a friend from Canada.He said they use plywood with a lot of nails in it,to cover windows and doors.
