Hey, I had to say that. Look closely. 'Brunhilde', there, is holding a large, Shoulder-held Missile Launcher!
My 2001 pic tends to negate the argument that the ugly 'Concept Vehicle' was a Design flash in the pan. They're producing SOME version of it, as posted in the RV pic above, >10 years later. I can testify that some of the Custom Rigs brought in for U.S. High Tech Trade Shows were amazing mobile Studios/Conference Rooms where the Big Dog Customers were brought in to escape the Show fray. You sure don't see those Rigs idling at Interstate Truck Stops. So, I guess the same could be true in Germany.
Or, perhaps Mercedes considers it some form of Branding/Advertising, like the large Decals and paint jobs on Semi Trucks here. All they might need to do is break even $$ on the ugly Truck in order to justify keeping a few on the Road, vs. spending it all on Media Advertising.
It's likely not accidental that the Windshield Wipers stop in the axis that mirrors the Mercedes Logo farther down on the Truck front end, eh? Avoiding obstruction of the Driver's view notwithstanding...
