Are You Ready For Sandy

Rain from Sandy is just starting to spread over our area at this time. Just hope we keep power through the whole thing. Might too, because all of the power is under ground in our development, but then the feeder lines outside of the development are not under ground either. Lived here for almost 6 years and had very few and very short power outages.

Turned on the computer this morning to check on "Frankenstorm" There is now a dire warning (no longer a "watch") about the path of this storm. After it slams the coast, it will take an inland turn and proceed through the center of PA and NY directly through the Finger Lakes of NY where I live!! We deal with 200" of snow every year, but are mostly spared the devastation of tornadoes and hurricanes.
This time it appears we will be hit with 5" of rain, and sustained 40-50 MPH winds with gusts to 80 MPH. We still have lots of leaves on our numerous trees. This is going to be big problem especially with power outages, falling tree issues, and flooding.
I filled vehicles and gas cans with gas this morning, while there the National Guard was filling up as well. Two truck loads of our local NG troops were on there way somewhere, probably to the coast. I didn't ask, just wished them well....

just put a new steel roof on the garage yesterday, the three layers of shingles leaked like a sieve. while buying the roofing at the orange borg had to go to customer service, they had received 80 generators that morning and only had one left two hours later. I am expecting this to go like Irene, a little rain and wind, possibly a short power failure, but the coast already has big surf, this is gonna wash away a few homes on Plumb Island, MA they think. My kids home school co-op just called and cancelled for tomorrow.
Storm warning is out in the yard uncovered, I may go out and get the lanterns tonight just in case.

A weather guru here is saying you are getting a storm like the 50 years ago Columbus Day storm we had. I lived on the other side of the mountains and don't remember anything bothering us, except it was the winter without snow for us, and we had gotten a brand new Flexible Flyer for Christmas, and we hooked up a hose to a nearby faucet, it was freezing, our driveway was sloped, and parents were not happy, but I digress.

The Columbus Day storm blew down so many trees, that marketing people developed the export market to Japan afterwards. Air raid sirens blew in Portland, OR, people were ushered down into store basements--not knowing what was going on. We have not had a storm like that since.

It was a devastating storm. I hope everybody is taking precautions and hunkering down. Take care.

Well, I've been told to evacuate, so I'm signing off until the other side of Sandy. I have a high ground place to go but without power there we'll be slightly screwed. If we can then make it to my family cabin all is good, plenty of water and an outhouse. I have the chainsaw loaded up and recently fired.

The one BIG problem with a generator is that they have to have gas, and for that the gas station has to have power. We are on the far edge of any loss.
Were we to be, the gas cans would be full and both cars, 16 gallons each, but we also have Compass Rose with its solar.

hopefully it isn't as bad tomorrow, we are planning on buying a new car then, figures, we bought our van in a snow storm...

We're just about ready. Plenty of Ice and I just made up about a dozen "Boil in Bag" meals. Lots of stored up fresh water, soda/beer
Lots of propane, a full tank of gas in both vehicles, lantern fuel, batteries & lights, boots & rain gear.

I'll be staying with Pop and Our "Base Camp" will be in the Garage/shop.

We basically live on an island surrounded by 3 creeks....that do flood.

No generator but we do have a Gas powered 3" pump. I brought an RV Refrigerator home so we've got refrigeration.

Just checked an update; looks like at 5am tomorrow things should be pretty exciting around here.

The "EYE" should be passing just south of Philadelphia........where I live!

These Big slow moving storms take a long time to pass ... be prepared for long power outages , as the service crews have to wait till the wind is less than 30mph before affecting repairs ... which can take several Days ... We just went through this 2 months ago .

If your neighborhood becomes and island, and there is a bar, drink up their booze first.

During one of our events, such was the case. Unfortunately, the flood had hit during elk hunting season, and the bar was full of drunken, obnoxious elk hunters. Not meaning to insult elk hunters, but the ones from out of town were totally bored and drunk. One poor soul had left his travel trailer in an RV park on the other side of the river, and the RV park flooded.

We stayed home, where we had ample provisions, until the water went down. We were an island for only 3 days.

I've seen articles where they say 50 million people are going to be affected. Say what? That many? Do you realize that the population of this country is only 300 million? So that's like 1/6th of the population.

I heard 10 million directly affected but when you look at the reverberations through the rest of the country. It will take the better part of a week for the transportation air, train, truck to get back into functionality for much of the east coast. This is a sustained storm and a lot of water.

Forecasters said Sandy's collision with a cold front once it makes landfall could create a "superstorm" that could generate flash floods, snowstorms and power outages from North Carolina to Maine.
This is the scary part--hurricanes crashing head-on into cold fronts: rain, rain, rain, more rain, rain and snow and wind, then more rain. Many kind thoughts to those dealing with this storm. Sounds like many have taken this seriously, though, and headed for high ground. Tomorrow morning we'll know how NYC, New Jersey and coastal areas have fared. Texas, and I suspect most states, have sent crews experienced in dealing with downed power lines up that way.
