Getting the start button back on Windows 8...

I've actually gotten to the point that I am looking forward to win 8. The day after Thanksgiving I ordered a Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook. (Still waiting for delivery)

Aren't all the programs in the "start button" available on the Metro tile page? The good thing for me is this Ultrabook is convertible from a laptop to a tablet and has the touch interface. So maybe after a few weeks it will be second nature...

Tim,

The XPS 12 is quite the small machine! I'm dumping a 13.3" ultrabook for a 15.6 sleekbook. Your eyes must be way better than mine!

Keep notes on how well you adapt to Win8 Metro, or not! I'd like to know!

I see you found lots of start buttons, even start8 on page 2 of this link... Lots of good ideas for when you get frustrated with Win8 out of the box!!!

You might laugh at me now, but I am currently using a Dell Mini (with XP). What is that, like a 9" screen with a resolution of 1024x576.
:?
Going to the 12" is going to be a step up! 8) Plus it will run my CNC program quick fast and in a hurry!

Some of us who stared with Win 3.5 (or was it 3.8) (do you remember it?) way back when, either refuse to change, or want to keep the tradition alive....

I think win 3.1 is when I got my first pc. Remember logging on to the Internet with a modem? I started with the 9600 and then upgraded to the fast one 14400...Wweeeee

Now we have touch screens and high speed with wifi. What will the next 20 years bring us?

I can remember somewhere around 1984 having Atari 800 (48k ram) and a 300 baud modem (don't even think it was dialup - think I had to manual dial and then "connect" phone line with modem)....And at that time the ultimate was 1200 baud..... 9600 was not even around yet.... And there were no browsers per-say, everything was pretty much pure text (command line) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol), pre Netscape days....... Think I actually had to write something in Atari Basic to take modem off hook and dial pulse out so I didn't have manual dial from phone...

Next will be... COMPUTER! "connect to tntt.com"...

I remember buying windows 3.0!!! and 3.1 and 3.11. But I've never heard of 3.5 or 3.8...

I also remember the dos days well. And I was running a BBS back then too. Only then it was Wildcat. And I had 4 modems!

Take a look at ClassicShell. It brings the start button back and takes you to the desktop on start instead of the metro mess. You can still get to metro on the sidebar.

Also, it's 100% free.

Once you get away from metro, Win8 runs just fine.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

3.5 was NT. It looked like 3.11.

I started with DOS too.

My laptop is still running win 7 and probably will be until l buy the next one. I have to deal with computers too much at work to want to fiddle with them at home anymore.

With Win8 flash is now built into the OS - you can only get updates through windows update. Microsoft wasn't even going to allow it at first, but they had a last minute change of direction.

Browser is still crippled in that it will only allow flash from (MS) approved sites.

In the alternative, there's this: http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Love it. I'll never go back to Windows.

Microsoft creates a winner again!.....

When I comes to browsers.... IE sucks.... Go FIREFOX... End the pain...
