Funny how different foods appeal to, or affect people differently.

Miracle Whip is great ! A peanut-butter and MW sandwich was a
childhood staple. Hellman's and other mayonnaises just taste like
axle grease to me.

Regular [out of the package] bologna and hot dogs are fine. The same
with spam. Hot dogs cooked by boiling are fine. But, fry them, bologna
or spam though, and those make me sick/ill/totally nauseous.

I remember a woman's magazine recipe my Mom tried one day when I was
a kid:

Bologna Bake

Take a muffin tin and push a round slice of bologna down into each
cup. Then do the same with a slice of american cheese or velveeta. Then
add a couple dill pickle slices. Finally crack an egg into the center of each cup.
Salt and pepper if desired. Bake at 350 degrees until egg is cooked through.
remove from oven and serve.

Each of those ingredients, out of the package [the egg is a cooked one of course]
I like, and they have no deleterious effects on me.

But just the memory of how the "Bologna Bake" smelled and tasted makes me
have to suppress a gag !

I think foods, and/or their taste, must have a strong memory response similar to what
smells/odors/fragrances have - or at least they can have a huge impression on you.

I remember once, when I was about 12-13, I went to work one summer day with my Dad,
who was a heavy equipment operator on a pipeline job then. We went to a very
Old-Fashioned General Store, located way out in the middle of open fields by
itself, to get something for lunch. We ended up getting some of their home-made bread
and a ring of their own home-made bologna. That's what they called it anyway. It didn't
look like the usual store-bought bologna. But one taste ! - And who cared ! ! ! That was
the best damn lunch meat/sausage I had ever tasted ! ! ! [And that still stands today !]
My Dad had the same reaction. We ended up eating the whole ring and wishing we
had more since that was the last one they had at the store at the time. And 30+ years later,
one day out of the blue, my Dad asked me if I remembered the time that I went to work
with him and we got that great bologna for lunch ? I sure did. I guess it made an impression !
If you have a house - you have a hobby.

wow spam (spiced ham) hotdogs, and other meats all sound good
I don't understand why frying would turn your stomack but my Dad's limb-berger cheese would.
my neighbor's mother ask if I liked fruitcake which I do she makes them at home adds brandy
it camed wrapped in cheese cloth and a xmas towel placed into a plastic xmas tree shaped box.
when I opened the box the smell was strong her hand written note said "don't eat and drive".
the best fruitcake ever and I have been eating them for 50 plus years.

I did buy a ham at the store yesterday if you reassambled the hog using store bought parts it would cost a thousand dollars
$16 for a small ham but Christmas dinner will be very very good.

It's all in what you get used to. Growing up, we always ate Miracle Whip; but, restaurants use mayonnaise unless they state on the menu that it is something else. Also, my ex used Best Foods mayo. Now, if I try to eat Miracle Whip, it tastes awful to me.

Here is an interesting fact: Mayonnaise always has the same ingredients in it because it is registered with the FDA, so it is safe for me to eat. I don't know if Miracle Whip is registered with the FDA; and therefore, don't know what might be in it or if Kraft can change the ingredients at their whim; so, I don't gamble with it and my food allergies.

If mayonnaise gets stale, it can taste like axle grease and turn you off really bad. I think the main difference between it and Miracle Whip is that Kraft adds sweetener to theirs, which, among other things, helps keep it from going stale and tasting like axle grease.

Okay...probably too much info.....

When I want mayo, I make my own. much better than any you buy at the store. But you so have to use it up quickly. I don"t have my hand blender anymore so it has been a while since I made some. I really need to so something with Spam. HMM, fresh mayo, spam, pickle relish...Spam salad sandwiches!

SPAM..........sliced thinly, fried crispy, on toasted bread with dill pickles and MW, Gotta have MW to give it that special wham. Hundreds of Hawaiians cant be wrong. The Tear or the Tiny Trailer never leave port without it on board. Might forget the beer, but not the spam. I can usually mooch a beer, but only the special people would have spam...........lordy, mouth is watering already..........Bologna is great too, but second to spam........yum, yum.

First of all it is not Bo-long-a but is spelled bologna. Miracle Whip is a Kraft Brand and its major difference from mayonnaise is the use of vinegar as a major ingredient. I much prefer the tangy taste of Miracle Whip and I can read the ingredients on the label of every jar I buy.

Get this . When I was growing up My parents used Best Foods. I still do at my house as I have stated. ( Dreaming of the tangy zip of MW) But here is the thing --- My mother never and I mean never put it in the fridge. I thought is was so strange when I got old enough to notice that people kept it cold. At our house the mayo any kind of Jam or Jelly and alot of other stuff that should be in the fridge was in the cupboard next to the butter!

Yup! Butter and mustard and jelly was in the cupboard. MW was in the 'frig. However, in my 20's, I worked at a sandwich shop where they would open a big jar of mayo and leave it on the counter, not refrigerated, all week. Nobody ever got sick. The vinegar in it fights bacteria. "Fresh from the bird" eggs are supposed to last a month on the counter....? Sometimes, refrigeration is more of a CYA than anything else; however, these days, it all goes in the 'frig at my house. With all the recalls, purchased food doesn't seem to be as safe as it used to be; plus, we don't always know how old it is when we buy it. ...Maybe it's just the way it seems and not reality, I don't know.... We do have better news coverage these days and that makes us more aware. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to keep it in the 'frig except the butter is hard, if you still use butter.

When in doubt,
Chill it out!

This thread reminds me of:

...Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens...
...Bright copper kettles and warm, woolen mittens...
...Brown paper packages tied up with string...
...These are a few of my favorite things....

 That's not a bad thing. :D
