Andrew,
I have two problems going with a much shorter trailer than the boat's length.
#1 My current tow vehicle is my glass truck and it has glass racks that are 7' tall on both sides. The top of the racks where I haul my plastic Coleman canoe is a bit over 8' above the ground. Even with an extended tongue, I can't get the boat too close to the glass racks.
#2 These cedar strip boats take a long time to build and special handling must be considered. I'm a bit leary about hanging one of these babies out beyond the back end of my trailer, even with lights attached, risking a rear end collision and getting the boat crunched. If you are curious about seeing my current project go to:http://www.bearmountainboats.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=2, then click on the word "Redird" next to Dean in Eureka, CA
I think after seeing the constuction photos, you will understand why I'm acting like a "Mother-Hen" over the boat.
The top of the glass rack is not a suitable place for the cedar stripper.
In the very first construction photo you can see the glass rack on my truck and see how high off of the ground the top of the rack is.
