Why would you ever need a hot water heater? I've only needed one to heat cold water

Actually you need two or more. Each member of our family likes a different temperature. No one water heater can accommodate everyone. In addition you need to start off with the "cold water heater" and follow up with the appropriate hot water heater. It's very complicated.

Would you set them up in series or connect the cold one to the others using a manifold?

FWIW...I used to turn the gas in the 30 gallon water heater in my apartment to just the pilot light. There was enough heat coming off to give me a nice warm shower. If i wanted a hot shower or ran the dishwasher I'd turn on the valve.

I'm guessing about 800 watts. Lets assume it takes 15 minutes to heat, that would be around 20 amp-hrs. That's actually do-able but you'd need a couple of hours of charging to replace what you used (if charging with your car).

These units have a great reputation:

Heating water with electricity on 12v isn't the way to go unless you have solar and dependable sun.

Black bucket on the fire or stove is the best.

Umm.... Its real simple, put bucket of water on stove when you finish cooking breakfast, by time you are finished eating breakfast, water will be hot...

Seriously, you are either dumber than a rock, or you enjoy pulling everybodies leg, or have a really subtle sense of humor.... Alternative is paper plates and plastic utensils...

Slow, cook your food take a pot 1 Gallon of water and put it on the stove. like I said by the time you finish eating it will be just at the boil stage if not boiling. Wash........... You don't use that much hot water during the day or nite. It takes 6 minutes to bring the water temp up to hot on the stove, maybe a little longer a minute or two if it is really cold out. It will take a lot longer to set up and prepare and build up other stuff and lets face it when you fill a tank you expell more propane when finished than it will take to heat the water. Psssssssssssss

Microwave oven.... *ducks* I've used one allot in the past when traveling on family business. Isolated second battery in the truck, and a big inverter. I used it to cook and to heat water for cleaning. It would take less than 200 Watts of solar panels to recharge for a days worth of cooking. I was always traveling when I used it, so I used the engine's alternator to recharge the battery when driving from place to place. For waffles, I got out the hotplate. 8)

Normally when camping I put a 2 quart tea pot on the camp stove when I'm eating. The spout is great for pouring the hot water on the dishes when cleaning. The waffle iron is the only thing that I may need a second pot of water for cleaning. It is fussy about getting the temperature gauges wet.

I have a 5 gallon plastic jug in dark blue. fill with water and set in the sun. Doesn't take long here in Florida.
Colman stove with what ever size pot I think I might need or have, works great.

The options as I see them
1) Coleman stove
2) Campfire
3) Sunlight/Solar
4) TV engine ( putting a heat exchanger into the heater circuit can be used for showers and all kinds of good things, but you have to warm up the engine to get there)
5)Electrical --You could alway drag an extension cord if you don't want to install 120V wiring
6) Chemical reaction ( I don't recommend it, but it can be done)
7) Nuclear power

8- Do you have to have hot water to wash dishes? I've used room temp when ever I camp.

If someone could rig a timer for a Coleman to automatically turn off the stove after a few minutes sounds like that would solve the problem. If someone figures out how,let me know. Perfect gift for my mom! (Queen of distraction...) :)

Most of the new turkey fryers have a timer on them. For your mom, just don't let her have a full bottle on the stove. They run out faster and shut off that way.
