I haven't heard anything official but many years when there are large fires the smoke shows up in our sunsets. lately the sunsets have been very orange, no smoke seen but bright orange sunsets. And that's way over here in eastern Wisconsin.

Diamond O and Camp Mather both escaped damage - all structures were saved. The Berkley Family camp nearby was lost.

not yet Kirk, but its been ugly at times. Worst days have had visibility under a half mile here. The wind shifted yesterday and its been comparatively better but that pattern is not predicted to hold. Our predominant winds come straight from the direction of the fires. Worst its been here since '08, and those fires were much closer. And from the sound of things it's going to be a while until they can get a handle on that monster.

[quote="slowcowboy"]quite normal doug we live in that forest fire smoke all summer here in wyoming you can't keep all the tree huggers from starting fires and if its not that it is lighting and all the beetle killed trees. than the stupid goverment won' t fight the fires and just lets the them burn.

It is hard to imagine that any "tree huggers" are out there starting forest fires. Across the western states there are literally thousands of firefighters working 12 hour shifts under dangerous conditions to try to get these wildfires under control. The firefighters live in tents for at least a couple of weeks at a time before they get a rest period. We owe them a debt of gratitude for what they do.

There are almost 1500 firefighters, on the ground, at the Rim Fire. Maybe it's someone else's stupid government that has put them there. I suppose all the tree huggers go dolphin and condor hunting when fire season is over.

Got smoke?

Postby nevadatear » Sat Aug 31, 2013 3:24 pm

Coming from a large family of proud treehuggers, many of them from the nefarious state of California, I can hereby submit on my honor, do hereby swear and affirming allegiance to John James Audubon, that narey a one of us has lit a forest fire this year.

We are headed, hopefully, out of the smoke a little, up to Unionville for the weekend with some of my cousins, the Californians, from SoCal even! I will ask if the lit any fires or shot a condor on their way over through this smoke from visiting other cousins in (gasp) San Francisco. The smoke has caused cancellation of all high school sports for a distance of about 50 miles around Reno. It is the worst I can ever remember in my 55 years (tomorrow) on this earth as a native Nevadan. And yes, we have forest and brush fires every single year too, just like California, Idaho, and dare I say , wyoming, and every other western state that still has free range brush or large , dry forests. But this one is spectacularly bad for air quality in our region. Kirk, the air races are still two weeks away. The bigger concern is the balloon races which is next weekend.

Happy birthday Nevadatear! I will be sure to hug a tree and then set fire to it in your honor.

All kidding aside, we owe our firefighters more thank yous than can be imagined for their skill and bravery. This fire season is one of the worst in recent memory and we still have fire season through October.

Plus 1 for firefighter support. As we are only 2 blocks from the local High school, i can hear that two teams from Reno are out here in Lovelock so they can still play their game. My guess is there will be two more reno teams out here tonight! :wine:

And thanks, phooey, for the birthday wish.

Some firefighters get spiked out away from the main camp, and some spend the night out without much of anything. It is dirty, tiring work. One horks up black oogies for a while afterwards. I usually came down with bronchitis after a tour, so quit going.

Want fuel loading reduced in an area? Put in a campground and allow folks to go out and gather their campfire wood. When that area is picked clean, move the campground to another problem area.

Just a forest type joke, it could never be done, but it would work....

It's now the 4th largest fire in California history. Burned 223,000 acres, has over 5700 personnel including those from the prison fire fighting program, 433 engines, 41 helicopters, 87 dozers trying to get things under control.

Here's a couple of interesting you tubes on tankers, don't know about the others, but they are using the DC10 in drops on this fire, see video #3

I think these big galoompas can dump quite a bit also. Note that the cat operator is a leetle worried. We saw some logging equipment that got the slurry dumped on it and it wasn't pretty.

The little plane in front is called The Lead Plane and they sometimes guide the big boys into where the target is.

I've had a little dumped on me while loading the boat getting ready to bug out. The fire jumped HWY 50 and I could see the flames from my house. The helicopter was turning over the house and dribbled after his dump. Doug

Wow, Doug. It was a little better yesterday hear, but worse again today, you can smell it indoors. Still nice up in Unionville, saw Kat and Sam Howe camping in their tear. Thanks for the B day wishes, Doug. Had a fab time in the canyon.
