Thanks Steve I may have one I seem to remember getting one several years ago, Some type of stone but since I don't make my own pizza I put it up somewhere. I will look for it tomorrow.

I picked up a Camp Chef at Costco this past August, it was on clearance for $100 and included the aluminum griddle, I think the non-discounted price was $130. It has a red exterior, but two conventional burners instead of the burner/grill combo.
I'm having to re-design my galley to fit it, but I can't wait to use it this season.

Here is what I use. It works well. I do however rotate shelves half way through.

It is a nos milcore stove top oven made in 1947. The box was still glued shut when I got it.

Oh Mark I guess my oven will be a newer one by 60 odd years or so. How lucky you could find one. but....How does it cook?

I know Costco is great at having sales but I think I will have to buy mine off Ebay, I will be looking to find the right price in the fall this year. Thanks for the suggestion I will keep my eye out though it is about 70 miles, I have to figure in travel and shipping.

Don't forget craigslist. I got mine there for $85 for the costco version. It had never been used. I just checked and two more are for sale locally.

What all are you planning to cook in your oven? If it is just the occasional biscuit, cinnamon roll etc, have you considered something like a pie iron? They work pretty good for one person "baking".

This will be for my Big out west trip I will probably be gone for about 2 months I know to see everyone I want to see plus to see all the things i want to see I figure I will not overdrive but will enjoy the things on my bucket list and if I add all the time I want to see things. then it might be 3 months. So what will I cook in my oven I will cook deserts some things in my DO and biscuits and casseroles, and lets not forget deserts. I have learned to cook once and eat three times. So I am taking a plate for reheating leftovers. I probably will use it a lot. I made a pot of beans and made cornbread on day one, a vegetable soup on day two, potato and cauliflower soup on day three, I made enough for three days, I made chili on the 6th day and added the left over beans to it I made cornbread again then I made squash and green beans and deer steak smothered in gravy with biscuits. I ate it for two meals then took the left over vegetables and cooked some noodles and put the vegetables in some marinara sauce with some little meatballs. Now I heated up the leftovers either in the microwave or the toaster oven. I prefer the toaster oven for reheating. during this time I also had made cookies and some little fruit pies I divided up the pie makings into 4 carafes and baked little pies. No one can say I don't eat good food. I have salads with some kind of meat, tuna, ham, chicken, or eggs for lunch. Tonight I took the left over grits from this morning and put onion, bell pepper and fried it up with some bacon and I had the end of the veg soup. I am ready to do some more cooking in the next couple of days. So I can talk about food and cooking and meal planning sorry didn't mean to bore anyone.

Food is never boring! Sounds like you have a good handle on the food issues. You do need a full oven. I doubt if you would be happy with anything less. Save your pennies and look for a good deal.

On your trip out west.....There are lots of free camping areas in many of our western states. Both the national forests and the blm land are usually open to camping besides the campgrounds. On the National Forest websites look for information on "dispersed" camping.

The BLM areas are less well known. There are blm maps that you can buy. Here are a couple of sites for online info:
http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en.html

For an online map there is the GeoCommunicator map http://www.geocommunicator.gov/blmMap/M ... SiteMapper

On it zoom into the area you are interested in, then on the right side is a menu called "Layers". If you click on "surface management" it will show some areas in yellow. That is blm land. Most of it has small roads into it with camping off to the sides.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks I am not sure about my cooking being southern so much. I guess it wasn't all meat and potatoes. that was just 8 days worth of food, this week I plan eggplant and spaghetti squash, asparagus and corned beef and cabbage. I just cook for three meals at a time.

The maps will come in handy, I had no idea there was such a thing. I will definitely use that. I love the forest roads with turnouts for camping too so I know I will use the maps for some out of the way camping. Free camping that is what I am about. I have to find all I can on this trip.

I think an oven will be what I get. I am just doing some money planning and wanted to get input before I decided for sure.
Thanks for all the information.

This is what I did today before I realized this thread was going.

Image

Coleman oven on a 425C, baking a frozen apple pie. The gage is showing 400 degrees. I put two fire bricks in the bottom. It took all most 90 minutes instead of 75ish box said. I think probably burn a bit over 1/2 tank of fuel. Have yet to measure that. Did not burn the pie and it is delish. Oh, I have a tea kettle on top to cover most of the holes and to keep warm. But it did seem to warm up faster with the holes uncovered but not all that sure as these ovens are not work of sealed joints.
