The biggest problem is that the OP was looking at buying from Oklahoma. I don't think you have to have the title to a vehicle in OK to sell it. I know someone that bought a car from a Dealer in OK and never received the title from them (they never had it). It took them two years to get it sorted out in Kansas. They also received a letter from the state asking them not to buy any more cars in OK. They promptly took their newly plated vehicle back to OK and traded for another one, but made sure the dealer had the title in hand before any money changed hands.

You should be able to get a 30 day temp paper tag for it from the DMV. I got one when I built mine and had to get it inspected and weighed. Just tell them you are buying a trailer out of state and need a temporary plate to get it home.

Texas is a pita to get a non-titled trailer registered as anything other than a home built utility trailer. But Texas requires "Travel Trailers" to be titled reguardless of weight. You will probably not get hassled but it could be an excuse for an officer to stop you.

I actually jumped through all the hoops to get a title for mine. That way if I decide to sell it, it will make the whole process easier for the buyer.

Thanks everyone. I decided it would be too much of a hassle to drive all the way to Oklahoma and back and then have to worry about trying to get tags. It's ok, I found one close to the house and if I don't like it, I'm gonna start a weekenderish build and let the sawdust fly. We wanna camp now, but I figure I can build the shell and use it as I go.

HMK,

It is a royal hassle getting a title for a homebuilt in Texas. Currently I use the license plates and registration from my harbor freight utility trailer on my teardrop. (The teardrop has a custom frame and doesn't use the HF frame). With the paperwork in the box, a HF trailer is easy to register. I know it isn't legal, but I've thought about buying a second HF trailer - the smallest and cheapest they have - as a "sacrificial" trailer just to get the registration for my teardrop. I've been to two different Texas DMVs and have been told different processes and required forms from each so the local DMVs aren't much help.

This is really not a bad idea. By camping in the "SHELL" you can get a better feel of what you really want out of your little trailer.

As an example I thought we would want a microwave DUH ! Used it one time never brought it again or even missed it.
Had I built specipically for it it would have been a waste of time.

Your little trailer can evolve over time and be "adjusted" to your style of camping
