Air Horn

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Having spent half of my life in bear country(black bear) here are a few pointers. Keep your campsite clean and wash stations away from your camper. Do not make sudden noises and or bright lights because it may startle the bear who may respond in a self defence attack. So you see a bear in your campsite from your camper, first do not panic, second make gradual conversation and slowly make the conversation louder. Next shine a flashlight at a spot the bear is not or turn your outdoor light on. After this has been done the bear will know of your presence and usually will have left. Then you can sound any louder horns and brighter lights and maybe a few yells. There are a few bears that have been too humanized and will not leave and these few require louder noise and calling for help if nearby. A sow may stay near your campsite if her cubs are scattered and by making very loud noises right of the bat you will probably tree her cubs and she will stick around or be very close. Usually we just take a few pictures(no flash) and wait them out. Now raccoons. foxes use the horn.

I guess there are many opinions on this topic. Mine is that I will use whatever is there for me if my or my family's well being is threatened. Yes I have Wasp spray in the house by the doors. I also have other forms of protection also. When in the woods (meaning bear country), I carry Bear spray and my pistol, if possible and given that my senior memory prevails.

Before posting this, I,quickly googled the arguement of Wasp Spray and disappointly, I could not find any. Mostly what I found ran along this line.

I Bolt one of these under my teardrop with a horn button on the inside.
So far I haven't had a need to use it on a bear or nefarious persons.

That link was a good read. Good information there.

Dogs absolutely hate air horns, however I wouldn't like to experiment to find out if the same is true with bears. I think bear spray is a more reliable defense, and definitely keeping the door locked at night.

I found a "D" note air horn on the side of a county road. Curiously it was right after a low hanging tree limb.

An air tank mounted in the trunk, a length of 3/8 " HD fuel line hose, a ball valve within easy reach of the driver's seat and the horn mounted in the engine compartment completes the installation.

No bears in Indiana, but with 80 pounds plus of air pressure in the tank it is a hell of a lot of fun in traffic !
Growing older but not up !
