I think you're spot-on. Somebody once wrote this thing:

https://www.amazon.com/ANALYZING-BALLISTIC-EVIDENCE-Scene-Investigator/dp/1468146203/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

:frightened:

Cartridge names are sometimes marketing mystique. The .44 Magnum cartridge fires a .429" bullet, for example.

Dude - impressive bibliography you got going there..
Pretty interesting career, too.
I'd sort of formed the impression you were a cop.
This required me to step on some of my prejudices (it's a long story) in order to enjoy civil discourse, so I'm pleased you weren't.
I've been published, with remuneration I mean, exactly twice - a couple of 1 page articles for a magazine. Total payment - $135.
I'm impressed by anyone who can write and sell books. Especially more than one - we've probably all got one good story in us, but more than one requires actual skill, I think.
P.S. I watched the videos. Do my eyes deceive me, or was that fat arsehole chopping the head off that animal while it was still alive?

A lot of the old calibers that started off as black powder use a much smaller than name size bullet. 44 was a .44 cal bore, but due to patching it with cloth the bullet was .429, same with 38, 38 cal bore 355 bullet. Once they started smokeless and breach loaded they sized the new bore to the available bullets at the time but kept the name.

I went fishing today. It was very nice. Caught plenty of fish too. Had a friend over and between us all fishing we probably caught over 50

Is that why a 38 can be fired in a 357 magnum?

I finished a set of Bluetooth speakers for my son's teardrop. It was a fun project and I learned a lot about speaker building and pourable epoxy. They sound great. Going to rebuild my first set for my teardrop and make a set for my daughter and son #2.

The kid's new speakers.

My first attempt for my teardrop. Not enough stereo separation. The battery pack on this one sits on the back of the case which is not perfect.

I had a speaker building phase, it was a lot of fun. It's amazing how nice a DIY speaker can sound and how much you save over commercial speakers.

Like the log round decoration on the front! A touch of rustic.

Maybe I'll document some of the steps as I build the other kid's speakers. The end grain under epoxy turned out better than I thought it would. Though it is kind of tricky.

I'll document the projects in "Off Topic" since it is likely going to be too much for this thread.

No, the history behind the 357 mag.

Once newer powders allowed higher pressure and velocity people where pushing 38 special. Well they pushed it to where they started blowing up older guns ( normally not actually blowing them up just plain breaking them ) , so iirc keith elmer lengthened the case 1/8 inch to stop the heavier loads with longer cases from fitting in 38 specials. Most of the newer guns had a cylinder that was long enough to be bored out the extra 1/8 inch. Boom he created the 357 mag, everything about the case was the same, just longer by 1/8 inch. Once it started taking off makers made ever stronger guns that had a cylinder factory bored for the 357 mag and here we are.

Then long range pistol shooters wanted heavier bullets for shooting steel silhouettes because to score they needed to knock down the target. They lengthen the 357 mag case, you guessed it another 1/8 inch and the 357 maximum was born.

And I miss typed the 38/357 is actually 357. Also most lead bullets are over bore by about .002-,003 of an inch, most jacketed are .001 over bore.

My Dad used a WW II surplus variac to cut foam wings for model airplanes back in the 1960's. When we could only find 1 inch thick foam insulation for our 3/4 inch wall cores, I thought about that, but Dad's old set-up had disappeared. I may have found the same Youtube/web pages you did, but it seems the modern method is to use a light dimmer switch:

154834 154837

154838 154839

Long bow in this case to cut across the 5 foot wide 'drop.

Worked well for that job. I may make some smaller set-ups for other foam cutting applications some day.
