Designing a Puffie Standie?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I'm most likely gonna go with the standie. I'm probably going to modify the design a bit. If I can widen it so one can sleep sideways, that will mean I can use a 5x8 trailer. Shouldn't be a problem.

Are you going to build out over the wheels of that 5x8 or are you going to do teardrop fenders on your 5x8?

I'm going to have to build fenders like you did, and I might have to move the axles back as well to accomodate a table bed thing like you did...

What would be the minimum sized Standy, that you could build and still have all the "amenities"...?? Seems like by the time you have all that, it would be at least 50% larger than a standard TD...I'd like to build a reasonable sized Standy on a Tandem trailer...Something big enough to be comfortable for my 6'3", yet small enough to tow easily..
Oh, yes...with a shower/potty...
My 6'X12' TD was 50% larger than most... towed very easy , no sway, no problems...But I sold it... :o To a really Nice guy who wanted something to use for hurricane evac, and a base camp for his wireless service during the "recovery"...Perfect!!!! Once he saw it , he had a big SE grin on his face ... Camo paint..and all...and "just in time" ...It was Very roomy, just not a Standy though, and no shower, so the wife didn't much care for that ...Sniff!!! I miss my TD... Time to start on another...Standy'

After hurricane season , there will probably be a lot of good boat trailers available to build on...

The camo paint scheme sounds like a great idea, now you got me thinking....which is not a good thing.

LOL. Thats good. I would do a woodland camo theme it was me. I would LOVE to do a digital camo, but that would be impossible.

easy floor plan?

Postby The_Vintagers » Fri Aug 29, 2008 10:53 am

my 63 Mobile Scout is a 13ft overall lengthed trailer. The cabin area is 6ftx10ft, outer dimension is a couple inches for wall thickness.

Two benches, running fron to back, 6ft3in long by 2ft wide. Between the benches, a 2ft aisle. Rear 4ft of the aisle is tabletop 2ftx4ft. Cushions turn sideways, table fills in last 2ft, back cushion cover table, we got a 75x75 bed.

Door on side, 2ft aisle, right side is countertop/kitchen, 2ft front to back, 5ft wide. Corner of front, a 22x4ft closet.

Line closet with PVC and shower pan, install potty in shower, and you got all.

Okay, I revisited the standie today. Since there are two standie threads which are very similar, I will rename this one the Puffie Standie, as it could have similarities to the Puffin.

I am currently looking at the 4x8' Harbor Freight chassis, as it seems to be the most popular due to price.

Which design do you guys like better? This one?

or this one

Both designs are quite tight. For starters the bed is only 72" long. I did that so I could package it in a 10' long design. Secondly the space between the bed and the counter is about 20", which is also very tight.

The bathroom in the lower picture only has 18" between the porta potty and the divider wall, so that's tight too. And the bathroom in the lower picture is only 27" wide, while the bathroom in the top photo is 36" x 36" before we lop off the corner.

But in the lower design, 2 people can stand up at the same time. In the top design only one person can stand up at a time. The other person either has to stand in the bathroom, or sit down.

Are these packages too tight?

Why stay at 10'? 12' is still 1-1/2 sheets of plywood, so no reason to not to add 6-12" if needed? Seems to me that the HF trailer could have the side rails extended a bit if needed with cross members. replace cross members with wood or angle iron. (seems you would need to extend it for a 10' trailer anyways.)

Alternately, sticking with a 10' floor with curves that extend longer front and back might give you a few more inches inside. Design the counter with a shallower base (15-18" with a 24" top).

As a person over 6' tall a 72" bed is not an option! A standard bed is 75" long.

I was thinking along those same lines using a 4'x8' trailer hanging a foot over on each side (like Puffin) to make it 6' wide and then curving each end out 1' to make it 10' long in the middle of usable space. Maybe somebody has already explored this, I dunno? While its not as pleasing to the eye as a canned ham shape I dont think its thaaat bad. Here's my rough sketchup draft I know it is full of mistakes I am still trying to get the hang of it but you get the idea.

Hmmm... that seems like a really small bed you have in there. It's about 72" long. I can't tell how wide it is...?

The other thing I don't like is how far inboard the wheels are. I like my wheels flush with the outside of the body. More stable around curves and all that good stuff.

And the only person I know who has made a 4x8 trailer wider, is Arne.

It looks attractive otherwise. How high is the sidewall?

Mike,
The side wall is roughly 7' and only 6' of standing room. I would not be widening the trailer frame but building out over the wheel wells making the camper body 6' wide. So I was thinking of having a bed roughly the same as the puffin a bed only 6' x 4' roughly. The wheels are not to scale
I haven't really gotten the hang of using sketchup yet. I have already gotten a trailer and measuring from the outside of the tire to the other it is five foot wide ( the inside frame is only 4') so i guess i would only have 6" hanging over each wheel. Thanks for the complement and critique .

BTW I am also working on one that looks like a tiny Spartan Manor I'll put it my album.

You should be able to get a full bed out of the space, or real close. Then package the wheels so you won't be too heavy in the back.

I have mine pushed out with curves but the bed only needs the top pushed out to work. I ended up with about 9 useable inches for the bed. Makes a big difference in floor space.

Nice design btw
