Designing a Puffie Standie?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby mikeschn » Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:07 pm

Jim,

Agreed on the cooler weather. This summer was too hot to build...

Anyways, I am still planning on doing a Winter Warrior. If you are going to do a Puffin Standie, then we can get two sets of pictures with one stone!!! Which Puffin Standie would you do, with the galley, or without?

How soon do you need plans for my Winter Warrior Chassis to do it this year? (I know.... yesterday!!!)

Mike...

Here I've added a vintage looking wheel cutout...

So the question becomes, which one to do a set of plans for, for up there in the menu.

Something simple, that you can do on a HF chassis,

or something more difficult, that requires serious modifications to the chassis?

Mike...if you do a step down entry...are you planning on a frame rail to step over only, or will it be raised from the exterior to the frame rail as well? I see a full height door, so makes me think it's just the frame rail. Doug

Doug,

If we do the HF frame, it would be stepping over the frame rail only.

Mike I'll need the Warrior plans in May 2009, that's a big project and I'm slow. We'll talk.

The only 5x8 trailer I see on Harbor Freight is this one for $599
There's enough spare steel maybe you could figure out a way to make it into a true drop frame trailer.
There I go thinking again, always gets me in trouble.
I think that plans for the design library need to use a kit trailer or tractor supply no floor trailer.
If someone wants to build on something else they'll modify the plans.

The HF trailer is worth the money because it doesn't require a tongue jack. Look closely

Sorry Mike. I see that's the HF trailer you talked about using on page 1

This is an idea I've been playing with
Back opens up to make a large awning
some shelves up top
Full width lower cabinet stores under bed (in yellow) and pulls out 2' to form the countertop.

This one has a 12' body but could probably be shrunk to a 10' on a 8' trailer

Okay, so I am looking at the frame running through the dropped footwell for the first time, and I don't really like what I see.

So here's the question for you engineering types... Andrew?

Can I cut the frame where it goes thru the footwell, and support the frame with 2 or 3 bolts running thru the floor?

If you mean just stop the frame either side of the footwell and leave a gap, then no.

But I am always amazed at how little frame many of the fiberglass trailers have at their (one side only) dropped footwell. This is a Boler and I reckon there's half the frame strength at the footwell that there is elsewhere.

So you need a frame that goes down then under then back up again, but it doesn't have to be as big as the main frame rails.

Andrew,
I agree they look wimpy.....but there are several thousand similar trailers on the road and they seem to make it. Most everyone on this site over builds including myself.

Okay, I'll look at a simplified dropped frame in the door area.

Do you really need a dropped frame ??? To stand up in one small area ??? Seems like a lot of trouble for so little ...Why not just make the trailer taller in the middle ?

I believe that the "puffin Clone" that was recently built had a step over? My next one will be a "stoopy" for me. I Found that 5'3" is an ideal height for the Mrs (5'0")and me (6'0") I can stoop good enough to put my pants on!

Yet another standy' drawing ...
Image

6' high , good for most (to put their pants on  ) 6' wide to sleep sideways , 8' long to conserve on plywood ...

Figuring if you hung a clothes pole crosswise above the rear side windows , you wouldn't need any curtains ... :o
