General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I need a 3D parasolid of the blades so I can cut them on a Shopbot CNC machine. Tim, are you ready?

I see most folks making about 24 inch blades out of 4 inch PVC pipe - Any reason you couldn't go larger with say a 36 inch length of 6 inch PVC? It's much thicker and stronger than the 4 inch stuff

Maybe the curve is wrong?

Hey Guys !!! Wouldn't the vertical axis drum type rotors be a little more practical for our TDs???? Old airplanes had"generators" driven by the wind ....maybe a small drum would charge your TD battery while you're driving ...??? :o

Nothing 'green' about recharging a battery with a wind machine while driving down the road - The increased drag caused by the wind resistance probably uses more gasoline than if you just recharged it using the vehicle's alternator . . . . that would actually be 'anti-green' - No?

Visiting this forum is dangerous to your health! You folks make me sick!
Yet another project that peaks my interest. Of course, more time and money will be needed. I kinda run a little short of both with the project list getting longer.

I have a 45' radio tower sittin next to my house. It would be perfect to mount one of those wind mills on. ............................................

Oh not another project I forgot at the side of the house. Except it is 65 feet.

I have a set of plans for 6" PVC - they have better torque than the 4". I went with 4" because I had some leftover from a potato gun project (that's another post ). The reason you don't see blades much bigger than 24" on an Ametek motor is heavy winds. The wind generator will spin out of control and destroy itself if the battery is fully charged and a strong wind is blowing. You can build a controller that will switch the generator to a resistive load when the battery is charged so there's always a load on the generator. But, if the blades are too big, the generator won't slow the blades down no matter how big a load is connected to it. So its a balancing act between blade efficiency and high wind capability. The next refinement in speed control is a furling tail that turns the generator out of the wind when it gets above a certain speed. Even bigger ones will change the pitch of the blades in response to wind speed.

Here's a link to a youtube video from a guy who's wind generator was destroyed in high winds. Its interesting to see the kind of forces that are involved with these things.

I just haven't found any plans for those anywhere. Don't know why, they must be harder to build or something.

The more I read about this the more I believe that you are violating the wind's basic natural rights. The wind was ment to be free and now you are harnessing it for your own selfish needs! I say, "No more wind cruelty." "Blow free or die!" "Save the wind!"

Maybe I should knock off the wine before bedtime.

Perhaps a Martini ...

The vertical axis generators seem easy to make ...could be retracted into a tube/housing for speed control...

Hi Bruce, you are a mechanical genius! At the end of your posts you list every thing in your teardrop. What is a Filon exterior?

I got the itch to build one after Eddie Miller posted pictures of his:

I haven't had a chance to fly it yet and probably won't for awhile since I've got the Tear put away for the winter. So I don't have any performance reports to give. But, I've got links if anyone is interested in building their own.

Thanks Arlene!

Filon is what I used to cover the outside of the trailer with instead of aluminum. Its the same stuff they use on big motorhomes. Its kinda hard to find but it works pretty good - cooler in the sun and easy to cleanup.
