Kirkman, that was awesome, thanks for sharing. And you Americans say us British are eccentric! ;)
Kind Regards, BigAl.

SC I found that the canoe actually improved gas mileage slightly as long as the underside was full to prevent cavitation. (we used dry bags with the PFD's and sleeping bags etc.)

In addition we plan to haul 2 bikes.

We're going to need to get real creative.

Becky,
Please don't take this the wrong way.. IMO that boat is a BARGE!! If you really want to build your own boats, at least look at and paddle some different, more efficient designs.

BigAl...... I am as about as eccentric as they get, according to my wife.

I have my eyes on a greenland kayak desinge with a skin on frame desingen. Its only weighs 25 lbs. You can pick it up with one hand and I do have a good roof rack on the roof of my teardrop as well as my suv.

The greenland kayak might be a winter progject. I have moved into the float tubes and the waders and flippers. Have not had a real big chance to try it out with fall ranch work under full swing but hope to next summer.

Slow,
If you want to build a Skin on frame Greenland kayak, check out:http://yostwerks.com/
Tom Yost has some great designs and the plans are free!!

You can also build wood boats that are light. Here's my last build. It's 20' long, and 20" wide. It weighs 30# Built with 1/8" cedar strips, light weight glass and carbon fiber.

Becky...

Pygmy does have some nice designs. I built one of those too. Here's the Pygmy "Coho" This was the first and only plywood kayak I built before I started building strippers.

Larry,

Those are some gorgeous boats you have built. You are an artist, for sure.

Would be tempted to put a reciever on the back of the teardrop and build a rack to haul the motor there, just to make people do a triple take, but I use a electric trolling motor on my 14 foot canoe, so I can haul it laying down(the motor not the canoe).
I have thought about building a boat, but I am still trying to find the leaks on my first teardrop.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

I would look into a bike rack on the back of the tear to mount the motor on. Besides, just think of all the looks you'll get going down the road....

Slow,

I've never looked down on any forum member because of difficulties with writing. (would be like a pot calling a kettle black.) Glad you got gumption enough to participate, regardless. Your creativeness (tear and that little motor holder) shows you are smart.

One of the smartest fellows I know, my brother, is dyslexic. Can hardly read and is a real creative speller. He can also program CNC's like a demon and make things from metal that most folks can't fathom.

I always liked a quote from Mark Twain:

"I never gave a damn for a man that could spell a word only one way."

I've been considering the Mill Creek design from Chesapeake Light Craft. It's available as either a 13ft single or 16.5 ft double cockpit.

Larry C., those are really nice kayaks!!! Love 'em.

I saw a truck pulling a trailer with 2 or 3 really pretty wooden kayaks on I-70 in Kansas ealier this year. I slowed down, honked, and gave him the "OK" sign. He smiled--I think he's had other fans drive by and honk.

I have a plastic sit-on-top kayak that I use for fishing. It's just under 10' long and it fits inside the SideKick, which makes it rather nice. Since it only weighs 37 lbs, it isn't too difficult to put it inisde the TTT.
