I second this recommendation. The Foghorn books rate the sites on the same criteria I like to use. The primary ones being "How good is the scenery in the campground?" & "How far away are your neighbors". Even with my larger pop-up, I nearly always dry camped with whatever water I had in my tank and no power hook-ups. If I needed water, I would use a cube or bucket to go fetch it. My wife tends to prefer only camps with flushies, and we had a cartridge potty in the camper. If I need light, I used lantern. If I needed entertainment, I got a book or a deck of cards.
I have found several jewel campgrounds that most people miss and can normally be reserved pretty close to the camp date.
