hobbies that help

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby Dusty82 » Sat Nov 06, 2010 4:52 pm

For hobbies, I'm a drummer, woodworker, amateur upholsterer, and just generally a gear head.

My wife knits, weaves, spins yarn - anything to do with fiber, she basically does it. She's also a bagpiper.

As far as drummer jokes go, I only know a couple: never buy more drums than you can haul to the pawn shop in one trip.

What's the difference between a set of drums and an onion?

Nobody ever cried while cutting up a set of drums.

You folks are really talented people. I do wish that I could master some of the things you have mastered. :applause:

My hobbies, past and present. I don't do them all now, but I have done them. Some were work related, others were just fun stuff...

Hunting, fishing, skeet shooting with rifle, fast draw and firing with pistol (happy to still have both feet), photography, including developing color slides and printing (turned a bathroom in a darkroom), built a small boat, Motorcycles (owned 3), British sport cars (owned 4), British sports car club, Drafting with pencil and paper (made a living at it for 30 years), designed and built couple dozen homes, Framing houses, trimming houses, hard wood floors, kitchen cabinets, ceramic tile floors, decks, garages, vinyl siding, T&G pine interiors, rock fireplaces, fences, wood carving, pottery, stained glass, stake out houses, dig footers, project manager, oh yea, design laboratories for hospitals, doctors offices, co-authored a training manual for field sales rep's in lab casework field, oh yea, I am now reduced to cleaning house, taking care of the Smoot zoo, and trying to build a camper, which seems to be harder than everything else.

a lot of this was work related. I worked in the lab casework field for 30 years. I did everything from drafting to hiring and training to dept manager to project manager. During the last 6 years, I worked for a sales office in the lab casework field. There I did the same stuff plus estimating and sales and actually installed casework and did punch list work for other installers.

I got my contractor license while working with the sales office and left them to build houses. Of course, my father in law was a GC and I had already built 3 houses for the wife and me before I stared doing it as a job. Now I don't do much of anything, but I think I will apply for a job with McDonald's flipping burgers. Yes, I know, this way more than you really wanted to know. Trust me I left out a lot of crap. Like T&TTT and facebook, etc
I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing...

I am a Bass player and played in a band for 15 years.... Don't get me started on singers and lead guitar players....

As far as my interests, they don't center around camping but camping intermingles around my interests.

I had been moving toward different styles of music and sitting around the campfire strumming some heartfelt tunes on an acoustic 6 string has always been a dream of mine. I go to parties where this actually happens which is very inspiring and that is something I am working on to be able to contribute to my own enjoyment, as well as others in the camping experience. I am not there yet, but close.

I like to build cool things. It had always been cars and trucks in the past, but when I started looking into building a camper, a teardrop was the ultimate camping hot rod. Right now I am building a new tow vehicle, I just realized last night that the lines on the side of my car are the same shape as a TEARDROP! I have loved these cars since I was 15 years old... what are the chances...

I am also a photographer; not for money, but for love. I think this can help capture the moments in life that we want to remember:

I also do graphic design and designed logos and shirts for my car club (for 73-77 Monte Carlos' imagine that :) )

No matter what I do, I am an artist...

Well I have been playing guitar for about 40 years. I play fingerstyle guitar and my hero is Tommy Emmanuel.

I also play Handball, Paddleball, and Racquetball 5-6 days a week. I am a woodworker, which helps building a teardrop, but there are other skills I am learning as I go. I have remodelled most of our house, and have also landscaped our lot.

I also write short non-fictional stories, and am in the process of writting a biography of my Dad. A truly great man and a great father who passed away 10 years ago.

I run my own window installation company, and I love to cook. My wife claims I am pretty good, but she is the real cook. I just throw things together.

Now with the economy being as slow as it is, I have a lot more time, but not as much money, so I do the things that don't require a lot of money, and save up to finish my build.

I used to play racquetball at a place on Brockton called The Tournament House. Circa 1979 - 1983. Is it still there?

Construction/carpentry/cabinetry; I draw & paint watercolours (I really prefer Sharpie markers, crayons & coloured pencils - which explains why I dropped out of art school 20yrs ago); I have 9 motorcycles in various states, one of which I accumulated one piece at a time & assembled into a running machine - I aspire to race a couple of the motorcycles one day; I can weld; I'm a bad amateur photog; I can operate a sewing machine well enough to tailor my own jeans but wouldn't say I can sew. Although I play no instrument, nor do I sing, I am a rabid music fan & consider every minute of the day spent w/o music to be time I will never get back. Therefore, I kinda collect records, but not in a "High Fidelity" record collector sort of way... I buy interesting stuff cheap at garage sales and junk stores & digitize it. I also cook & bake, and will admit to making pies good enough to embarrass many grandmothers. My children have not had store bread at my house in almost 2yrs. Finally, I'm an amateur historian (although well on my way to a teaching cert) and read a lot of historical non-fiction etc. My 9yr old son has been sharing a lot of graphic novels with me lately, which I like.

I'm a full-time college student looking for work... this is the last real job I had:

... oh, I like to camp occasionally, too.

Woodworking/carpentry. Not sure if you count them as hobbies. I have built my last 3 houses, and my parents current home. Outside of that have also built my last 2 shops (Don't laugh my current shop is much larger than my house and in some ways nicer). That encompasses everything from carpentry to electrical and plumbing etc...

Metalworking isn't so much of a hobby as it is part of my job as I own a steel fab shop.

I also sit at a CAD station everyday all day most days when I'm not out in the field so it "helps", but it also means I'm more likely to walk out in the shop and lay something out to see if it will work instead of draw it up in CAD.

In the pure hobby sense the hobby that I have that helps the most has been wooden boat building, mostly in respect to tools and wood on hand and contacts for said items.

I also build giant scale radio control airplanes (from 25% to 42% size of a full scale plane) but I'm not sure it helps other than having about a billion clamps on hand.

I want to start building windchimes. I have all of the parts except the ones in the picture. They are 3 inches in diameter
and have either one or three holes stamped in them.
They are nickle or chrome plated. If any one knows where I can find them please let me know.

Always coming in late, and usually using the wrong key...

Cliff,

It is still on Brockton. That's where I play every morning at 5:00 AM.
Anyone there that you want me to say Hi to, just let me know.

I checked out your build pictures. Looks pretty good. I wished I had documented the beginning of my build. Next time. I am already making plans to build the 2nd Teardrop next year.

Maybe we'll run into you camping next year,

Ken & Kay

After 27 years, I doubt there's anybody left I would remember. I know the 3 guys I played with regularly are gone to other parts of the world now. :D
