Greetings Y'all,
I have been reading this with great interest. Some time ago I sat down with paper and pencil and came up with my design for a "standy " as you call it. It would be built using the cargo trailer basic design.
The cabin would be 14 long x 6 1/2 wide x 6 high (interior) The entire camper would be aluminum. From the center line forward the roof would drop to 4 feet at the nose to have it pull with less wind resistance. There would be two 2 x 3 sliding windows in each side, fantastic fan in the roof, house hold air conditioner (5000 btu) mounted in the rear wall and would have a rear entrance door. Inside
would be a small kitchenette on the left rear side. A 2 x 2 shower/porta potty on the right rear side. The two bunks would be 30 in wide each mounted front to rear in the front with about a 12 inch isle way.
I already have a 3500 lbs torsion axle with brakes wheels and tires. I priced the 1 x 2 aluminum tubing and the skin which is not cheap. I have the shop and welding equipment to do it all. I then went to a local cargo trailer mfc company and ran my plan by the owner/engineer. According to him my plan is very doable. I want to check out what I can build it for compared to what the company would charge me to build the frame, skin the unit, installing the windows and door using my axle, wheels and tires. The difference in time and trouble may not be worth my doing the basic building of the frame and cabin. One other thing was that he said he would take care of assigning the VIN and Florida title. I would then take care of building the interior which would include the electrical, plumbing, refrigerator, microwave oven. cupboards, shelves and other storage. He is going to draw it up on cad and will get back with me as to weather he can do it within my budget which is $2000.00 for his part. Here's hoping..............

Greeting folks,
I am trying to search out where I can locate information about a small fiberglass shower enclosure that measure 24 x 32 that I can include I my build. We, have in our area, a camper/travel trailer salvage yard.
I want to go there and check out what they have in widows, doors, showers, and other goodies to numerous to mention. I have also located a local company which builds cargo trailers. Although they are some
what over my budget in what I want I can wait a bit longer in order to get the additional money put aside to cover the cost. I showed them my print and I am told they will work with me. I can supply my axle,
windows, door and what ever else. My wife still is rolling her eyes I will keep the faith.

Been reading this all through today, lots of neat ideas, but didn't really go close enough for my ideal family camper.

Buckshot, you know if you were really determined and motivated, you could probably make your own shower enclosure by glassing over a male plug mold constructed of foam sheets and sanded down to the internal shape of your cube.

I am not to good with fiberglass. The project has been on hold for a while. My camper money had to go else ware and I am attempting to rebuild my funding. The shower unit is still one of the problems I have to contend with. I am still looking for the same small plastic or fiberglass enclosure. One idea is to take a larger fiberglass unit and cut it down. I think I am able to make a joint at the cut like to bring it into size. If I cant find a small unit that is my next chance to get this to work. Then I am need of finding out how to hook up the shower drain into the gray tank which will be directly under the shower.

Twelve ft long, 7ft wide. Basically a trailer for two but could possible put fold-down bunks above the two existing sleeping areas for kids. A curtain running diagonally across from the closet back corner to the bathroom back corner could separate the two sleeping areas for privacy or to block the light from one to the other.


This version is shown with vintage windows, as that's what I'm going to use in my trailer, but of course, this sort of icing on the cake would be up to each designer/builder.

Well after a long hiatus, I'm back. This time its a necessity. My RV has gave me a headache for the last time. I'm done....

I've been eyeballing a "standy" off and on through this forum for a couple of years now. So its time....

I don't NEED the ability to cook inside, it would just be nice. I really don't think a fridge would be worth the trouble of install. I'm thinking of one of these new coolers (the kind that keep ice for like a week or something like that) would do the trick.

The only mandatory thing for me in one of these is the ability to go potty. That could be simply done with one of those portable camping toilets with the cartridge thingy or something similar.

I WOULD like AC and heat though, with heat being the priority since I'm more likely to be camping in fall,spring.

I'll guess I'll look around a little and get started sometime soon!

Hadn't seen this thread (thanks kamperdog for bumping it up!) until now. Mike, your very first post in this thread isn't too far off from my plans.

A big part of all of this seems to be that we all have particular wants and needs... which is why we're here, building our own! Glad this thread is up and jogging again. Looking forward to any new info.

Here's a couple requirements I think we should include.

Ability to stand up inside it.
Ability to cook inside
Ability to go potty inside
Ability to take a shower inside
Ability to use a bolt together trailer
Ability to sit and eat inside
Simple construction

I'm going to start it this summer.
The only thing mine won't have is ability to take a shower inside.
You can take a wet towel bath, hospital styled.
I could even allow a few gallons for some rinsing.
It will have a 31 gallon black/gray water storage tank.
The bed is small. It is 30" x 75."
There is a 5' 2" wide kitchen counter at the front.
This is meant for propane of white gas stoves.
There is a closed in Toilet at the rear.
A closet for storage is beside that in the rear.
Under that is battery storage for a 400 watt solar system.
I'm building an improved Ice Chest for cold beer and bacon.

When the bed is tilted up, it exposes 12 deep storage.
That position turns the bed into a couch over the storage
and increases the floor space for a recliner folding chair.
That floor space is for cooking and eating off a fold down
table top. You sit on the booth type sofa.

The solar system is for Satellite TV, on a 12 volt TV, and
a fully digital recording studio that all runs on 12 volt DC.
All lights are 12 volt LED. The only thing that needs 110 volt
AC conversion is for the Satellite Dish controller. There will be
cigarette lighter power fittings all over the trailer.

This thing is meant for one person. The inside is only 5' 2" wide.
It's built on an #1800 HF trailer with a different way to cantilever
the floor out wider.
It has a full height commercially made RV door and Frame. I found
it at a Habitat for Humanity outlet store for $100. The inside height
will be at 5' 9" making it as low as possible for towing.

All the walls are 1/4" plywood with 1 1/2" studs and corning insulation, with 1/8"
interior wall paneling.

There are just two windows, one in the bathroom, one in the main room
opposite the door.

I'm going to cover the plywood with poor mans fiberglass and paint.

It looks like it is coming in around 1,000 lbs dry with the bedding included.
The batteries and solar will add another 150 lbs. I'm actually going to work
on a lighter method. I'd like to get it under 1,200 lbs half wet. that would
be with the ice chest full.

It will be towed with a new Toyota Corolla, rated to #1,500 lbs towing.

This thing is built for long term stay at BLM sites in the winter down by Quartzsite, AZ.

I am thinking of a Winter Warrior design.
Lower profile when towing, able to expand to an 86 inch height so I can stand up and stretch. Foam build with wood ( or steel ) to reinforce the stress points. I want to put solar panels on the roof, use wood to frame the windows, make the hatch from 1 inch foam/ wood. Back- foam with wood frame, each panel individually made and fitted. Use the interior to help hold the exterior and maintain rigidity. Need more drawings and description. Let's call it "Yeti"!
