Thanks to the anonymous officer.
Good information for us all throughout this thread.

The Insurance Information Institute has a free Home Inventory program to list all your stuff including receipts and pictures. http://www.iii.org/
Keep a backup copy in your safe deposit box so you always have the information you need for the police and insurance.

:?   Lets see, with all the information theft going on and I am going to list all my stuff online???????????Ok so I don't really have any stuff, but until there is a such thing as secure I will keep my own information. Course I am gonna regret this as soon as a tornado or fire gets my stuff.

 Ya know we used to all have safe deposit boxes for that stuff. ;)

Just get them to borrow them from Mesquite. We seem to have more empty patrol cars than there is parking for.

Tom, that is AWESOME! I wish I could have gotten the same response from my local detective when that happened to me, but I guess you didn't either eh, it took a local friend to help out. That is good news!

Oh, my mom emailed me today saying my backordered tools she ordered for me for Christmas came in and she tracked them and they were on my front porch! When I got home, I could tell the Fed Ex guy had covered the box with my astro turf because if was pulled off to the side and the box was gone  At least they were from harbor freight and not snap on. Congrats to you buddy!

Cliff,

In California your driver license number is assigned to you forever. Even if you move out of state the number will still come back to you. I'm sure that the other states do not reissue their numbers either.

Here's what I get to park in my driveway. We don't seem to have much problem with theft in my neighborhood either. The Tahoe was issued to me new in 2007 and what a sweet ride it is.

Here's the car that I had issued to me in 1995. I think is was one of the best police cars ever built.

That is such a cool story! It really pays to know people, even in cyberspace.

My parents live on a dark dirt road, after replacing a few mailboxes, they had one made out of brick. It was quite large, because it held one of those oversized rural mailboxes and stood about 5ft tall. The mailbox bashing stopped but eventually somebody hit it with their car. My dad's buddy saw the mailbox when he came over for a visit. He just happened to be a detective for the local PD. He checked it out and found a piece of light. He found the kid just a few days later.

My mom and dad had already figured that they were going to have to pay for it, but got lucky that my dad's buddy came over that day. It's really cool when things work out like that.

Great new about the capture. About a year ago my best friend who lives out in the country was robbed and she had a hard time because she didn't have records of her "stuff". I found this free software offered by the Insurance Information Institute. It's easy to use and free. I never knew I owned so much stuff. I added everything in case of burglary or fire, etc... I like that you can scan in the receipt and add a picture. I have copies of the database in 3 places just in case. The teardrop is already in there. Check it out.

I would never store any information online either. That's just asking for trouble.

I posted that same link. :D
It's a great piece of software. I've been using it for years. It's amazing how much stuff you actually have.

Hi guys,
Just to clear up any misunderstandings. You don't keep your inventory online. The software is downloadable and you have a file you can put on a disk or flash drive to keep safe. I keep a copy at work in case anything bad happens to my home.

Another reason to mark your possessions and not to just rely on having a record of the serial number:

A good friend of mine had her very expensive road bike stolen, and she enlisted my help to find it. I left fliers at neighborhood alert centers (mini-police stations), contacted pawn shops and bike shops and bike groups, and the bike eventually ended up for sale on Ebay about 2 weeks after it was stolen. I was told by local officers that items aren't listed immediately by the thieves because owners usually check Ebay and Craigslist for the first week or two and then give up. The bike owner did not have a record of the bike serial number, because she thought the bike shop had recorded it on the receipt, but they hadn't. The police at first said she couldn't prove it was her bike because of this, but when the bike was eventually recovered, the plate with the serial number had been removed from the bike. Even if she had the serial number, it wouldn't have been any good, but the bike and its accessories were pretty unique and she was able to get it back.

So, mark your items, and check Ebay and Craigslist, and you might recover them.

Mike,

It's a '95 Caprice. I picked it up new from the dealer and drove it until last year. I put that car through a lot of pursuits in the time that I had it. It is one of the most stable cars that I have driven at speeds over a 100 mph. I was planning on driving it until I retired but had a foot injury on the job that made it almost impossible to get in and out of it because it is so low. I got the Tahoe last year and my foot started healing within about a month. I wasn't putting pressure on my foot getting in and out of the car.

The Tahoe I'm driving now is also a great vehicle. I've had it in a couple pursuits in the past year at speeds over a 100 mph and it to is pretty stable. It's two wheel drive and handles as well as most large vehicles. It has the new modular engine that's putting out 330 hp so it moves pretty good. It will out run any of the Ford Crown Vics that we have.
