Engineer Guy, thanks for your informative and always interesting posts. In keeping with the Thigh Bone connected to the Leg Bone theme, the following was reported in the Austin American Statesman newspaper on March 16th:

Japan earthquake displaced water in Edwards Aquifer

The water level of Texas' Edwards Aquifer was displaced about a foot Friday after energy released from a massive earthquake near Japan put the squeeze on the underground rock formation that supplies drinking water for much of Central Texas.

The 9.0-magnitude quake caused its walls to contract and expand, officials with the Edwards Aquifer Authority said Wednesday. A monitor in a Bexar County well that continuously records the aquifer's water level noted the oscillations, which lasted about two hours from late Thursday to early Friday morning, said Geary Schindel , the authority's chief technical officer. The force from the quake took about 15 minutes to reach the aquifer, he said.

"When a wave from an earthquake passes, it slightly compresses and dilates the aquifer, and the water will shoot up and down," Schindel said. "Any time we see a major earthquake, it's commonly recorded in that well. They act as seismographs."

The oscillations during high-energy earthquakes are common in artesian aquifers, or confined aquifers, where the water is pressurized, including the Edwards Aquifer, Schindel said. "We saw Haiti, we saw Sumatra, Japan, a couple in Mexico and Alaska," he said of recent earthquakes....

Junebug -- that is fascinating. Thanks for the info.

Now that you mention it, I vaguely recall hearing of such associations after the Sumatra quake.

Mega Tsunami

Postby Engineer Guy » Fri Mar 18, 2011 5:09 pm

An USGS Monitoring Well in VA went 'up' ~2.5' temporarily from the recent Quake [Baltimore Sun Newspaper]. I saw a Graph on line of the level changes there, but can't find it this moment. Very interesting to read more about the TX Well and what actually happens. Tnx for that JuneBug.

Also interesting is this recording of what the recent Quake sounded like:

Japanese Quake Audio

When we bopped around Scotland in a rented Class C RV picking up ~3 billion year old Rocks, we stopped at a small Village Museum. A seaside-living Celt Habitation was wiped off the proverbial Map when a collapsing Land mass in Norway caused a ~30' Tidal Wave on the Scottish E. Coast. One indicator was the Pottery shards found well up the Bay Cliff Walls, and Wall 'dirt' composition that included Sea Shells.

My Nephew and Family, teaching in Thailand, rented a Beachside Bungalow yearly at Xmas. They didn't go the year of the huge Tsunami. Professor Pals were seriously injured and lost their Twins to the Sea. They adopted Orphans from that catastrophe some time later after a healing period.

This story linked below is on 'The Discovery Channel' occasionally. A fellow hikes around the Island and shows even us Average Joes where the very-obvious slippage is. Mind boggling! Buh bye Manhattan and E. Coast...

My point is posting this is to 'balance' the Man-made and Ma Nature causes of what we all can prepare for [or not]. This is also critical info for planning sufficient Rum reserves.

My son and I watch crazy shows on History and one of the shows was talking about a super computer that has predicted events in the future.

Well, the computer says it gets no data from Dec. 2012 to June 1013. That is six months! Six months without electricity is a long time. I better get a kerosene heater, and a tank full of fuel, rice, beans, candles and powdered milk to last 6 months! Maybe I ought to buy seeds for a garden too.

I doubt anything will happen but the super computer did predict 9/11...so who knows.

I loved the article of the Texas well...great stuff.

 Super computers might be able to predict earthquakes but 9/11... How do you predict a human driven event?

You ladies sure have a lot of great information going here!

 I guess I would have to say only that to "predict" a human driven event, you need to input pretty credible information.....

I just read that article about the web bot. Total bunk, sorry.

Should go in the round file with Nostradamus. Say something vague enough and centuries later some event might fit it. And when you have a miss just say that a previous event had changed things.

Don't forget that you need to cycle your stock so you have fresh supplies.

Randy, it is a real project. Doesn't matter if the stuff they predict is true or not it is interesting and entertaining.

NASA has predicted major solar storms for the next 1 to 4 years. I really wonder if a solar storm could knock out the east coast's power grid for a year?

But you know it's better to be stocked up than be sorry.

Yes, the next few years will see an increase in solar flares. Just how bad they will be. If they hit the earth or not.

in the 1850s one hit the earth. This was just after the telegraph had become common. It did major damage to the telegraph system. including burning down some offices.

The Web bot thing is a business venture of those two fellows. They sell reports to generate income. They won't revel the algorithms they use to collect data.

I keep plenty of water on hand, would be nice to have a whole mess of food and money for about a 6 month emergency. But lets be honest. just how many people can really do that? I consider my skills as a back up, can do a bunch of stuff to make a bit of a living.

We live in a sub-division and if we don't have electricity we have no heat, no bathroom and no water in the house. I'm thinking of getting a wood stove put in the house this summer. We live near streams so we can purify and boil water. We would have to dig a litrine if we have to go several months with no bathroom. I'm thinking of stocking up on rice and bean and powdered milk. At least we wouldn't starve.

I have no idea what folks in the city would do without a clean water source if there was no electricity for 6 months to a year.

Anyway just some thoughts.

Most likely they will come to the suburbs, trying to find food and water, then they will head out into the country.

Having a stream nearby is good, but it will be a pretty popular place.
The head of a stream or river will be better, as those downstream gathering water will probably also use it as a toilet.
Even if they don't, backed up sewage will find its way into storm drains that empty into streams.

Being prepared is wise.
Lets just hope the length of the "disaster" is short, a few weeks or a month or two at most.
Once you get into longer scenarios, there are so many logistics problems that surviving the hoards that weren't prepared, becomes a scary proposition.

Rob
I'm not promoting any end of the world theories, but here are a couple links to interesting reading that presents some basic common sense reasons to be at least prepared for a minor local disaster.

This one is the LDS. manual. Though peppered with religion, the LDS group has really thought this through, and offers realistic advice.

Rob,

The LDS manual is great. Thanks for posting. I was wondering how to deep a litrine needs to be and now I know.

 Just curious Doris, why won't you have a bathroom. Unless you have an electric flushing system all you need is water to flush. A hot shower might be harder to come by...

When our electric was out a few winters we still had hot water because the gas stayed on. Long term that might be an issue. We have large plastic barrels with water for flushing. A lot of the plants that get soap will have them and gladly give them away to keep from paying to recycle..
