Son of Hibachi grill

Postby Duane King » Wed May 30, 2007 7:32 pm

It's no secret that I am looking for a charcoal grill that will store in my below bed storage compartment. I just found a link to the "Son of Hibachi" grill.

Are any of you folks using this product? Here is a link to a very short movie about this grill:

I just found another movie on the website. Here is that one:

That looks dangerous... but I'm sure they've got it figured out...

Nice compact package...

You going to test it for us?

I was going to wait and see if anyone could give me a recommendation. But I just ordered one about 5 minutes ago. This thing is small enough to fit in my underbed storage and the ash bag accessory will keep me from making a big dusty mess.

It's cast iron and should hold up better that the thinwall steel hibachis I have seen. The big drawback will probably be that you can only raise the grill surface about 1 1/4" above the low position. That is not much adjustability. But it is only 5" thick when layed on its side. Sounds like a trade-off to me. . . I found out from the distributor that this product has been around since 1974. It is sold almost exclusively over the internet.

How about I give a review after I've had a chance to fire it up?

That has to be one of the finest example of an animal shaped cooking device I have ever seen. I actually looked around to find one of those when I saw an earlier picture you had posted of it. I couldn't figure out where to get one and I was too embarrased to ask who owns the "pig grill".

Very cute.

I have the Hibachi grill, it must be close to 30 years old. I got it from my folks. At first I thought it was steel but now that I think about it, it was heavy for the size and it has no rust on it. I will have to dig it out of storage this weekend if I can find it, to see what it is made out of. It worked real good. My folks use to use it a lot when they went camping. I really like the way the ash tray works. The old one where very well made.

Definitely made out of cast iron. They were thick and higher than the new ones, the grills were stronger, and just all around better made. I'd love to have one of the old ones back...

I promised to let you know what I thought of the "Son Of Hibachi" grill. Tonight I made some won ton soup for the family dinner. Part of the recipe called for barbequeing marinated pork.

I pulled the grill out of the trailer and lit it up following the manufacturers instructions. (as shown in the video at the top of this post). When I closed the sides together to allow the coals to heat up, I could hear a whoosing sound as air moved up throught the unit like air in a chimney. The coals were fully coated in grey ash in less tha 10 minutes. I was able to start cooking right then cause that sucker was good and hot. The meat was in danger of burning because the grill surface can only be raised about 1 1/4" above the coals. I went inside for a few minutes and when I came back out, the meat was searing maybe a bit more than I wanted. This was a factor of my inattention and not a design flaw with the product. If you didn't want to cook your meal quickly, you would probably need to wait until some of the heat dissapated from the coals. The way it was, I could see that meals are going to be prepared very quickly. You can keep food warm by placing it under the unit. That works very well.

I put the unit into the bag to put out the coals for future use. That works well. Overall, I am quite pleased with this little barbeque. There is no lid for covered cooking (as with a Weber), but for open flame barbequing, this does what the advertising promises it will. And it is small enought for my teardrop. I know most of you folks are committed to making everything with a dutch oven. But if you ever desire something else, this barbeque might help you prepare it. I give it three thumbs up.

Nice review Duane. It's just the right size for our little campers.

Hey--that looks GREAT! Not only is it portable, but you have the separate cooking surfaces!

The only thing about hibachis is that you don't have a lid, but maybe you can figure out a way to rig something.

The promo showed a 9x13 inch aluminum baking pan being used as a lid. Says it fits perfectly.

Seems the grills are too close to the charcoal. Would work if you rationed the charcoal to regulate the heat.
If it's not broken, you're not trying hard enough.
