Vintage Coleman LP Gas Stove???

Postby rainjer » Thu Aug 02, 2007 1:34 pm

Does anybody know anythig about the old Coleman Picnic stoves? They used a LP Gas canister. Can you still get the fuel? Could it be modified to run off a 1lb. propane tank?

here is an example:

I am tinking of getting one for my trailer if I can get it to work.

LP = Liquid Propane,

I am a little confused unless the fittings are different they should work fine without having to do anything.

If the canister does not fit inside the stove then you could buy an extension hose

This listing show the Fuel can & fitting in the bottom right picture. I looks like to me the can has rubber tip you poke the fitting thru??? I would assume these are low pressure cans unlike a 1LB which is high pressure?

Jeremy, they use the tall skinny LP bottles like you use with a soldering kit.
like the one shown here.

Actually, looking at the pictures, it looks like the threads are on the INSIDE of the can, not on the OUSIDE.... It can be retofitted though.....

rainjer, you posted two different items. I'm not sure but are they butane. That's what the second item looks like, the first I think is about the same as the second. Butane is still available, but quite as easy to find.
You know that Hank Hill, noted propane expert of Texas and television fame says "butane is a bastard gas"

According to what I have found, both of the stove I posted use Coleman LP gas canisters. I have read the are no longer sold & I have read you can get them still. I was looking for someone that my have use/owned one of these stoves before.

I was thinking of buying one & trying to convert it to use a 1lb propane with a regulator.

Well, I guess if you lok at ALL the pictures then it is clear that it says LP. I would think that it was cool enough to convert, after all, how hard could that be after building your own trailer.

I have a couple of partial canisters and two picnic stoves. (one 1-burner & one 2 burner). The cartridges are not threaded at all - they are press-fit with a small o-ring.
You may be able to find the gas canisters left over in some old hardware store or bait shop somewhere, but I've not ever found them in quantity; you may be able to retrofit the stove to accept one of the more contemporary canisters..

I'd sell either of mine if you are interested. They are both in nice+ condition; one has the original box.

I am looking at one of the old coleman picnic stoves that Jeremy referred to in the first post a few years ago. Did anyone come up with a source for the fuel or a conversion kit for the modern propane canisters?

Jerome, The old links don't work so I'm not sure which stove they were looking at. I think this is what you need.

Thanks Darren,

The ebay pics do show the type of stove I am talking about. I am hoping to find or make some sort of adapter for the modern screw type propane canister rather than the butane canisters but it is good to know there is something available.
