Do you.....?

Just wondering, when I used to tent camp, among my gear was a Ruger .357 Magnum, and a Ruger 10/22. Of course I camped in some pretty remote places. Plus the 10/22 helped me bag a rabbit or 2 for dinner.
Do you travel armed? If yes, why? If not, why not? What are your thoughts on being armed or unarmed?

It's not legal in most places, it's stupid, more people are killed by their own weapon than are protected. People who need to carry a weapon camping need to grow up and get a life. If you are going hunting, that is a totally different story. I do not have a problem with that. Bring an appropriate weapon and be responsible and have a good time.

Good point. I guess I should add that I do not plan on being armed. No need, as I plan on doing most of my teardrop camping in friendly places.

Here’s the deal… I posted a similar question (although mine ask about campgrounds) a few months ago and got some pretty negative remarks. It led to some PMing me and I do believe the thread got locked and maybe deleted… and I said I wouldn’t make no posts about guns no more….. but since you asked…


Yes I do. I have a concealed carry permit for a couple different states. I don’t always carry, just when I think it is appropriate. Camping or even just screwing around in the woods I do carry some type of gun.


Some here think it’s prudent, like car insurance. You never expect to “have” to use it, and you certainly do not want to use it, but if you need it, it’s a life saver.


BUT, some here think even bringing a gun is unacceptable. It was pointed out to me that you wouldn’t have shootings without guns… a very true statement in itself. Some here are very passionately against carrying and even owning a gun.


Personally I love to shoot and quite often target practice while I'm camping… bring a black powder revolver with you, that is a lot of fun and really cheap to shoot… and will still get a critter on your spit.


Oh and I am a big Ruger fan, I have a few… what model .357 do you have, GP, SP or Blackhawk? I’m partial to single actions myself.

I believe the.357 was a GP, it was a double action. I't long gone because I traded my brother a 16' teepee for it. Still don't know which one of us got the best deal.

Out here in Cal, we have a problem with illegal pot farms, I would hate to come up on one of these, other than that, I see no need for one, unless, you hear a banjo playing

im for everyone carrying we should protect our own selfs instead of having "authorized people to protect us only they can" what bull. im in full favor of the second amendment. now that you know i have guns would you try and rob my house. there you go. :-)

Aw yes the enthusiasm of youth… don’t get me wrong now that isn’t meant as a jab…

But let me say… packing for a rabid coon or a vicious dog is a very long way from throw’n down on another man.

When you kill a man, you take away everything he owns and everything would have ever owned. You not only kill him but every child he would have had. It’s not a small thing and once done, can never be undone.

It’s an easy thing to say and it’s even an easy thing to do. But the living with it after, that’s what’s hard. I have killed many men; I am now in the double digits and I see every one of them everynight when I close my eyes. It leaves a hole in your soul that you can never fill. I never take carrying a gun lightly and neither should any of you.
