5 lug on 5½" circle hubs ????

Postby Rockcrusher » Fri Mar 11, 2005 4:20 pm

I'm working on preliminary plans for a teardrop and so far I haven't been able to locate any axles or torsion units with this bolt pattern.

Does anyone know of a source?

The standard Dexter Torflex axel has 5 X 4 1/2 lug pattern.

Most light duty trailer axles today are either 4 lug or 5 lug, 4 1/2" circle. The 5 1/2" circle is old Ford, like '40's and Ford trucks. Don't believe you will find a current production trailer hub with 5 on 5 1/2" lugs.

Are you trying to use Ford wire wheels or something like that?

You might have to get new hubs with the right pattern. A local trailer supply would be a place to start. Other than that you could get wheel adapters.

Actually, I want to tow it behind my '68 Jeepster trail rig or '69 Ford F100 4X4 camping rig and not have to carry some little oddball spare tire. With a 5 on 5½" pattern, I can use my Jeep/truck spare.

Thanx anyway

I think you have the large ford bolt pattern like my 72 f-100, Igot my Wheel Vintque wheels thru discount tire or any tire retailer in your area. 8)

It is the "large" bolt pattern that was standard on Ford & Dodge ½-ton pickups, Jeeps, Scouts and a few other heavier vehicles. I've got lots of Jeep wheels for my rigs and I'm trying to source an axle that has hubs I can bolt the wheels up to.

So far, the only axle I've found is the Reliable Series 10 which range from 2,500 to 3,700 pound capacities . . . Kind of overkill for a trailer that will gross out at 1,500 pounds or less.

I want the trailer to sit on 33×12.50-15's mounted on 15×8" wheels . . . That will give me 18+ inches of ground clearance so the little guy can follow me into some of the places I camp and wheel.

Rockcrusher,

An alternative might be a pair of billet wheel adaptors to go from your 4.5 hub to 5.5 wheels. Search on eBay under wheel adaptor and wheel spacer. They are CNC machined out of high grade material and you can get them hubcentric also. Another plus is that it would help space your tire/wheel combo out given that you're talking about an 8" wide wheel. I have a pair on a Mullins Redcap luggage trailer strictly as spacers, not to change the pattern, and they are fine.
