My Scotty re-build

Postby len19070 » Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:45 am

I just bought a mid 60's Scotty Sportsman and dragged it home last week.

Like most Scotty's it needs work.

All the windows as well as the door have to be redone.

I'm gonna redo all the siding and put a rubber roof on it too.

Some of the wood is missing as well as the cabinets and must all be replaced.

I'll re-enforce the frame as well as replace some wood there too.

But hey, a little work and it'll be practically brand new.

Image

I started stripping the frame yesterday.

Found the vin and discovered its a 1966, 13', production # 6810, Goucho Model made at the main plant in Irwin, PA.

Thanks to Jerry Maurer for showing me where to find the Vin.

Its got a broken spring so its getting new "Torsion Axel" running gear.

Its going to go into the 60 degree range tomorrow so I'll probably start sand blasting and change out the Axle.

Pulled apart the windows, straightened them out and basically found out what I had. The door is shot but the frame and screen door are in tact. I have found a new/different door.

I'll have to make new jams for 1 of the windows and possibly a second.

The Frame

I was relatively impressed with the construction of the drop portion of the frame.

Some of the ones I have had a glance at were real crap..no reinforcement, "but to but" welds, But this has gussets and reinforcement all over.

I feel just a good cleaning, the new axle and tar coating will put this frame in good shape again.

All my photos so far.

Looks like a fun project Len. I was just down at Steve E's the other day. He's redoing one also. What specs do you think you are going to use on your axle? I'm thinking of a similar project, just haven't committed on an axle yet, have some ideas for it though. Doug

I had a 48" Torsion axle sitting around for years. Brand new, never used. I can't even remember what I originally bought it for.

But it's an off the rack Northern Tool Axle. (though now i would use one from Southwest wheel)

Its already on, all the dimensions were right and it fit like a glove.

All the labels and sku#'s are still on it.

I'll get them and pass them on.

Wow, Len, That looks like an ambitious project! You're pretty much starting from scratch! That torsion spring suspension is interesting. I never saw anything using those springs. Cool!

I did get the axle swapped yesterday.

The new axle has bolts instead of studs for the wheel lugs which I'm a little bothered about, but not bothered enough to do anything about it or make me say no to a Basically Free axle.

I'll live with it.

The original rims won't fit the new hubs by just a few thousandths so I'm going to turn them a bit today.

Then back outside to be pressure washed then in on Thursday for prep and undercoating.

I got my frame in a decent condition this week. All sand blasted, cleaned and coated.

However when I installed the new axle I knew it would sit a bit higher.

Well it sits a bit higher than I want...which for a Scotty is not really a bad thing.

The step is just a little uncomfortable to step into...Sooo, since I have a "step up/step down" model I have decided to lower the step to the drop down floor level as I have seen on other Scottys.

Image

My only concern with doing this is the door height.

I have a new door (though not in my possession at the moment)

That will be the determining factor.

I think it will be a wise choice to drop the step to floor height.

There appears to be plenty of clearance, and as an added bonus of the new axle raising the ride height, you "could" make the dropped floor a little deeper...

I was admiring your work on the frame and a question arose. I see that the main supports of the trailer are ABOVE the truss mounts. How does the floor attach? are there spacers?

Yep, its built up with 2" material then the floor is secured to that.

heres a shot while tearing it down;

Its tough in the photo to see the differance between the wood and the steel.

Well I was all depressed about missing the last 2 TearJerkers Winter functions, NE BS Session and the Winter Fest at Coops Cabin, I went out into my shop At about 6am Friday and just started cleaning the place up...after a while I started some stuff on the Scotty.

2PM Friday

Then I really got into it, and then I started drinkin'

First off NO story that starts off with the phrase "And then I Started Drinkin'" ever turns out good.

Depressed, Drinkin" and a Trailer,

Theres gotta be a Country Western Song in there somewhere!!

I left the shop at about 1AM Saturday, staggered home, got a good nights sleep then back to the shop on Saturday morning (late Saturday morning)

The first thing I saw was the carnage from the day before.

Image

Then I turned around...and there was a Scotty Trailer, just sitting there.

Image

I just about have all the Carpentry work done and am shooting for having at least one coat of paint on the inside by the end of next weekend.

While I would never condone the mixture of alcohol and power tools  , you seemed to have made it with all your body parts intact.

Nice job so far! :applause:
