Jeep patriot as T/V

We are looking at a 2011 Jeep Patriot and was wondering if anyone is useing one and how does it tow a teardrop ?

We tow ours 5x10 with the wifes Liberty once in awhile. It has a short wheel base, but does fine. It has the V6 in it. Does not hurt the gsa mileage to much. I have also used it with the 6x14 flat bed to take furniture up to michigan for the son. Did fine. So I would say yes. We use my truck because we always take to much junk along 8)

We have a 2004 Liberty and tow with it just fine. I believe the Patriot can handle about the same as the Liberty depending on how it's outfitted. You might talk to the dealer about what options are on the Patriot you're looking at (check the sticker on the driver's side door post, and look in the owner's manual.) I know on ours, the max capacity without the towing package is 3500lbs, and with the towing package it's 5000lbs. I don't know what the specs are on a 2011 model.

The shorter wheelbase hasn't been a factor so far, but only because I haven't towed anything longer than 12' overall with it yet.

That is very surprising, it's a nice looking car. Must be built really light. And it looks like you can not get the V6 in it. But only a 1000 lb. towing weight is nuts.
Our Liberty handles the trailer very good. The ride is not that great, and the room inside is very limited, that is the big draw back for us.

That's good to hear. :thumbsup: When I got mine, I was told that the Liberty was actually made for towing. That's probably the one to get.

I already love mine (2009, bought last July w/ LT 5000 mi.) and I find it reasonably roomy. Haven't towed with it yet...She gets her new hitch this week. I have two friends who have owned Jeeps. Both of them kept theirs for 25+ years and still rave about them.

:thinking: Does yours have the special tow gears and, if so, have you ever actually used them? For our little trailers, I question if we would need those except for on very steep hills.

You know I never paid any attention to that, but I don't think so. It is just a 5 speed auto. Janny doesn't let me drive to much. She says I am to hard on it. :twisted: It is fun to drive, like a little go-cart.
I got it for her for the four wheel drive. She does not do well on snow and ice. :lol:
We got it used a few years ago. It looked new and still does. I think it is an 04. But it has the driving lights on top and all the four wheel drive stuff to make it (trail ready) from Jeep.
So far the only things that have been fixed are the turn signal lever, it was starting to get lose and new tires.
She has always had a mini van for the boys. We went looking for a new car for her and past a dealer ship that had it sitting out by the road, she thought it was cute. Thats how we ended up with it. I did a little looking at the reveiws on them before we got it.
All I can really say is she loves it, it runs and drives good, did I say she loves it ? ha.

I think the Patriot and Liberty are two completely different platforms. The Liberty is a replacement for the old Cherokee and while it is unibody it's primarily a rear drive vehicle with a 4 X 4 option.

The Patriot is based on a Mitsubishi car platform and is also unibody of course and is primarily a front drive vehicle with a 4 X 4 option.

And yes the Liberty is heavy with mileage to match, but also is much more capable as a truck.

At about $3 per gallon, my Jeep Liberty currently costs me $20 more per month than the Toyota Tacoma used to; but I haven't taken many trips with it yet. The tank is almost twice as large; so, I fill it up nearly as often as I did before. The one trip that I did take it on was one that I take a couple times a year. It cost $75 RT in gas, compared to the Tacoma, which would cost $50. I'll think carefully and calculate fuel costs before I take it any major distance; but, I would do that anyway. I love the way the Liberty handles and feel very safe in it. So far, the only thing I miss about my Tacoma is the truck bed.

Which also makes the Peugeot 3008 and Citroen C-Crosser cross-overs - there's surely something wrong with an American product called 'Patriot' also being a French product? :roll:

Patriot towing capacity

The Patriot has a 2000 lb towing capacity if properly equipped (i.e. a cooler). The 1000 lb is for a straight stock Patriot with nothing added.

I'm towing with my 2008 Jeep Compass. It's the same drive train as your Patriot. I did order it with the Transmission cooler, and the hitch is by Uhaul. The Trailer is a 5x8 Silver Shadow (800lbs GVW)

I'm averaging 22MPG with the rig, although, I struggle on the big grades.
