Operacion " deep freeze"

Postby Weirdnerd » Thu Feb 17, 2011 2:46 pm

Well, I went and lived in my teardrop for a month ( job related), there I was, when a cold front moved in, and spent several nights in subzero weather, the lowest according to the airport weather station was -10f, windchill of -30f and some other nights between 0f and 5 f, I am really glad I built it with 1.5 inches of foam insulation all around, passed with flying colors, I just used a Coleman pro cat heater, and left the top vent open, slept very comfortably with a t- shirt, and other than some moisture, I think unknowingly I saved myself from becoming a frosted version of that guy I normally see in the mirror....

Cooking was a different issue, I tried one night and the noodles took 1 hour to cook.....

 :applause: Pictures please! I know that is hard when working :(

They make a high altitude stove you may want to invest in. The one I saw was fairly small but if you need to heat stuff and don't have electricity it could be very useful...

Congrats!

interesting top vent open and pro pane heater and I was told you would kill your self. interesting so it is possible and not crazy

you just left the top vent open. Why would a window open not do the same???

like i said interesting.

any one else have a comment why this guy is NOT dead?

Slow... you might want to step back and do more research before you get so excited. :R

Coleman Pro Cat heater = a propane/platinum CATALYST heater. No flame (other than startup), no carbon monoxide. One does need to, however, leave a 6 inch-square opening for oxygen; the device does consume oxygen.

I've used a similar Coleman model propane catalytic heater: the BlackCat, and it's a wonderful invention!

Again, only these propane/platinum catalyst/catalytic heaters are safe for interior use... although one should never really leave them on while sleeping. Any portable heat source placed nearer to flammable materials (fabric, etc) should never be left on unattended. Use them up until lights out and again as soon as you rise, according to the unit's instructions.

That is very true, I found out one night that the fan batteries died out and the heat from the catalytic heater left a discolored area on the ceiling, I am planning to install a stainless steel firewall plate there, with baffle high temp silicone 1/8 inch backing over the heater shelf, so it doesn't happen again, I had good airflow, and the door is not airtight, but I carried a small Co detector ( battery operated, it has a very loud chime) I did not want to run any chances.

It's a shame you couldn't park the teardrop in the hangar.

I wanted to stay "anonymous" sometimes I used the parking lot to sneak some sleep..... mostly BLM land at the end of a runway, with the bunnies, the military jets on training and the occasional raccoon that sniffed around about 2 AM....nobody thought the teardrop was actually a camper...hehehe
