Theft in camp

Has anyone ever been the victim of theft in camp? Do you leave things out overnight or do you secure everything before bed?

I leave stuff out or under the TD. I don't leave my fishing poles or small stuff out.

lost some fire wood and a pack of smokes   was some kid in a big motorhome. they stayed up all nite and raided our woodpile, so i got back at them. I made a big sign out of a box and taped it to the side of their motorhome that faced the road....I hope they got some looks the next day 8) 8)

our first year at LCG we had some "masked bandits" that raided the coolers... but those sneaky little critters had a great breakfast...

My wife is very security aware. I keep telling her that we don't have to worry because everyone has nicer stuff than us (why would anyone want my cheap crap when they probably came with better stuff to begin with?). When we went to the Grand Canyon, I rented a cabin at the KOA to have a place to lock everything up. The family tent camping across from us had an open pickup bed trailer to haul all the gear and just left totes and coolers sitting out around the perimeter of the site. I'm sure they didn't put anything away until they left.

We do not close everything up, BUT things like the AC or Tandem Bicycle or... are secure with a lock and cable/chain. There is NOTHING you can do that can not be foiled by a large bolt cutter or an angle grinder. All you can do is slow them down and make it obvious.
I am thinking in terms of buying an off road traier hitch simply because they are not somthing a thief is likly to have and securing it with safety bolts. If you could make a lock using superplastic steel i.e. 1999 you might be able to foil a bolt cutter. I used saftey screws to secure the solar panel and chose one of the ones not in the 100+piece bit set from HF
If you want a tutorial in how to decimate locks look on Utube.

A lock only keeps a honest man honest if someone wants something bad enough they will get it.

You need one of these signs, so the thieves wannabe would be warned...

We keep all personal stuff like wallets, purse and camera inside the truck at night and when we're out in the water and at night we put the cooler in the back from rodents but thats all. I also carry a hand gun so if you try to come in while we're sleeping you might get a surprise.

If I have to worry about someone steeling something of mine when camping, I'll quit camping.

Several years ago at a camground teardroppers don't frequent any more, several people lost entire coolers and contents. Kids after beer, dumped the food and coolers in the woods, most got their coolers back except Mike...who had a really nice high dollar one. They kept it.

If I'm camping near any sort of community that locals can easily access the campground, or am by myself, I'm more vigilant in tending to stuff. If it's more remote or am with a group...I"m not so much.

I did see a guy leave a beautiful 242 lantern sitting on a picnic table in a campground and they were gone for the day....I wouldn't do that! Doug

And I thought it was a new "field artillery" piece with a side opening breech!

Cheers,
