Long trip in the snow...

Postby mikeschn » Sat Feb 26, 2011 8:40 am

It was a long trip...

We had a hunch it would be when we woke up. The campground had flooded from the rainfall the night before, and then the rain changed to snow, blanketing the campground, and all the roads...

We left early, hoping to miss the worst of it.

Alas it was already too late. The highways were covered with ice, and we saw lots of cars losing control and going off the road. It wasn't until we saw a large truck that I thought I should have been taking pictures.

So I dug the camera out, and took a few pictures. By this time the worst of it was over. We had seen probably a couple dozen cars slide off the road.

The trip took an extra 2 hours... not bad!!!

 And the ‘out of staters’ tell us we don't know how to drive in the snow.

Mike,

Being from Michigan, you probably already know, but it is good to rinse/wash the trailer as soon as you can to get the salt off the chassis, and especially if you have aluminum siding.

One of these days, I'm going to build a trailer that won't be damaged by the tons of salt they throw down everytime the weather man says it might snow in two weeks...

Enjoying a near empty campground in winter has got to be worth the effort!

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

Over the years I have learned it's those other drivers that can't drive.

I think an ice covered road can make a good driver bad.

I have my share of close calls and some I waited to be towed.

glad you made it home, 1000 miles south is Florida you Know..

The campground photo is Terre Haute, IN. And yes, it's amazing how empty it was.

And all the cars off the side of the road were also in Indiana. We just kept shaking our head in disbelief. :? People didn't slow down when there was ice under their wheels.

Bob, It's supposed to warm up a bit the next few days. Hopefully we'll have a chance to rinse off the trailer.

Doris, I heard today that we've already had 30" of snow this month. I'm ready for it to be over. (looks out the door!) Opps, it's snowing again.

Note that two out of the three pictured drivers were in SUV's. just because you can go better does not mean you can stop or control the vehicle in a skid any better than a two wheel drive and most have a higher center of gravity.
I have a Subaru Outback with VDC... and at the beginning of every winter with the first snow falls I play in the snow getting my "snow legs" back. I test traction prior to needing it, see what it takes to break the wheels lose.
