I am unfamiliar with coal. But wouldn't the smoke be stinkier and more disgusting than dry, seasoned wood?

I heat my house with a wood stove. We do campfires too.

I burn it in the forge but never thought about using coal in a campfire.

If you have a free standing wood stove or an insert in your fire place, you want to be careful about burning coal in them. They are for wood. The coal burns very hot and will warp the metal on some. Also the way they are ducted into the chimney may create hot spots in the liner.
