I got the same kind of email from a friend who lives in Rathdrum, ID (15 miles from my house). It claimed he was in London and yada, yada, yada. He is 83 years old and doesn't have the money to fly to London, so I knew right off the bat it was a hoax.

I just emailed him back and told him his (Windoze) computer email had been compromised and he should get the computer cleaned. He emailed me back thanking me.

This same thing happened to Pam last year. She needs to do something about that.

PS: She posted on facebook that she knows about this problem and is warning everyone not to open.

Hmmmm, just today, someone hacked into one of my email accounts, and used my addy to send spam emails with a message in Russian, to thousands of .ru email addresses.

I found out, because the undeliverable emails triggered several "postmaster" notices telling me of hundreds of emails that could not be delivered.

CD

Don't know if all of this is true, but will pass it along for what it's worth. (It might be just an urban legend and I don't know how to research it.)

Received an email from my neighbors over the weekend talking about email accounts being hijacked and how to prevent this and how to notify you if it is attempted against you. (It was an email that they forwarded to me.)

1. How to know if your email contacts list has been hacked.

It suggested that it is easy to know when your email account has been hacked. How? Simple. Put a fake contact address into your address book ([email protected]).

This fake email contract will sort itself to the top of your address book and be the first one attempted by any malware attempting to hack and use your email account.

If malware attempts to send an email to your fake email address, it will not be delivered and will bounce back and show up immediately in your inbox as undeliverable. You will see it the next time you logon. This is your notice that someone attempted to hack your email account's contact list.

This part seems logical to me.

2. Stopping your email contacts list from being used to spoof your friends.

However, my neighbor's email went further and said that if the first email sent from our account was undeliverable, then the malware would know this and stop processing. It would not attempt to send to the other addresses in our contacts list.

I'm not certain this last part is true. (Would be nice if it were.)

Well, maybe someone asking for money is better than the ones I'm getting from my friend's computer. Hers keeps sending out advertisements for Viagra, etc.

Instead of a contact with @@@@@.@@ or something like that, I have a contact in my list with the name of 'Me' and my email address. That works, too, because I know if I sent anything to "Me".

Here's my problem that someone maybe can help me with.

I use Outlook Express. Used it for 6-7 years. I have yet to figure out how to delete a message without opening it. Just highlighting it makes it open.

My neighbor, also using OE, says when I read it in the "preview" panel, it's not really open. But the little envelope icon next to it shows open.
