theft prevention

Postby droid_ca » Wed Mar 02, 2011 1:09 pm

has anyone put an alarm or lojack on there trailer
my main concern is going somewhere and setup camp go out exploring come back and its gone
There is a world, just beyond now,
where reality runs a razor thin seam between fact and possibility;

Anywhere I roam where I lay my head is home....

It's a concern of mine also, especially considering the antique nature of the hitch lock.

I lock the wheel chocks to one wheel with chain and a padlock. Maybe a little more difficult than the hitch lock.

I use a teardrop lock by LG (http://www.golittleguy.com/teardrops/store/) - 4th item down. Of course, that won't work if there's a spare hanging around and you don't have locking lug nuts.

It might be overkill, but for our Scotty we use:

Trimax Wheel Chock Lock:

A coupler lock:

and a coupler latch lock:

An Ounce Of Prevention...

Postby Engineer Guy » Wed Mar 02, 2011 3:18 pm

I needed a heftier TT Safety Chain, so I got 9' of 'peened' high strength, 2,600 lb.-rated Chain and 2 'Hockey Puck'-shaped Locks keyed alike at Home Depot for ~$66- total. That included 2 substantial Safety Hooks w/spring clips that keep them retained on the Hitch Receiver. These Locks are 'satin' finish and have a plastic Key cover. Single or keyed-alike Locks have the Key Code on the packaging, so you can buy identical Key Locks.

I loop the Chain in-and-out of the Tongue front symmetrically, and keep it immobile by a threaded, closeable Link. Both ends then drape to the TT Receiver Loops. On site, I can remove this Chain and loop it through a Wheel to the TT Frame and lock it. Wheel and Spare Tire Wheel Locks complete the the installation which can only slow down Bad Guys; not prevent theft by the determined/well-equipped.

An Alarm, when I'm off Hiking while Bookdocking, didn't have much appeal to me.

I use my heavy duty bike lock cable that is designed to keep my bike safe in NY city. I just run it though the wheel and around the Axel.

Got a a coated cable and lock plus a lock on the hitch.
Anybody who takes the time to get them off wants the camper more than I do.

If you think any of the above will defeat a bolt cutter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYJLcA32mv0

Didn't we just go through this exercise? The best you can do is slow them down. Lo Jack is $695 maybe the one for trailers is for a 20ft or longer?

Mine's ugly. No one would want it. :D
I think a pintle hook would be the best deterrent. Keeping things from disappearing out if it would be a different problem.

I agree.

If there's that much of a chance of theft, we'll camp somewhere else.

I'm less concerned about locking it up like Ft. Knox when we camp. It's when it's sitting in our driveway when we're off to work that prompts me to lock it down.

Why couldn't you just have a removable coupler on the trailer tongue? Maybe just use a couple of drawbar pins to pull out and then the theif has nothing to hook up to....
