Post Office

Postby Bodyman » Thu Mar 03, 2011 2:34 pm

I received a call from the Post office this morning . They had a package of teardrop mouldings from Grant which was too long for the rural carrier to deliver. I told them no problem I would come pick it up. I have done this in the past.
Upon my arrival the counter person paged the local Postmaster who came from his office bitching about this being a really long package. He stated it is almost too long to mail I asked if it was within the limits (8’!/2â€

Interesting; this a.m. news was Postal Service iss on the verge off going belly up. One would think that having business would be a good thing at this point.

Several years ago when UPS went on strike; local postal carriers were carrying full loads and having to split routes because of the amount to work; they seemed quite glad to have lots of work.

In 36 years, I never complained about having something to do the next day, next week, next month; it meant there would be another payday. Perhaps the postmaster needs a reality check.

Our Postal Carrier was very pleasent with our delivery from Grants. Seemed more interested in what I was making, and didnt mind the size at all.

Ditto.

Our letter carrier delivered our white PVC pipe-o-trim from Grant with great anticipation. He took a couple of moments to look at the trailer and comment on our progress.

I've worked with the USPS for the past 25 or 30 years of my career. Most employees are great professionals who understand what they do and how important their jobs are. As with any industry, there are a few idiots who seem to attract the attention. It looks as though you came in contact with the idiot.

It can depend on the staff, and not the whole company.

My place has always been pretty friendly.

I remember I got a very, puzzled call one morning when my chickens got to the post office (I ordered chicks, rather than hatch my own). They were very caring and accommodating.

Then again, day old chicks are a lot more endearing than an 8' hurricane hinge.

I have heard a lot of complaints about are local PO but have not had a problem before. I have noticed they are a surly bunch, though. It doesn't appear to be a fun workplace.

The first 15 years or so that I worked for the PO, it was the best job I had ever had. Then, somehow, it was the "numbers" that became more important than the job done. Supervisors were having to spend 9-10 hours a day putting data into the computer. Well, if you are staring at a computer all day, then you aren't supervising.

The entrance of the computer/internet/email etc have all had a detrimental effect on the USPS. People don't mail stuff first class anymore. Letters, cards, bills, shopping..all done on the internet. Your surly postmaster is probably concerned about how to cover the same territory with half the personnel. Or maybe about keeping his job.

I would be most happy to go well out of my way to bring this to the attention of the fellow's supervisor.

Bad day, dealing with pressure, whatever the perceived excuse, the customer is the reason he has a job. :NC

The customer is not always right, and in those circumstances it is quite acceptable to properly inform them, but from the version you have provided, the guy needs to be re trained, reprimanded, or at least reminded that if you offend customers, the customers go away, and so do the funds needed to for his paycheck.

Rob
PS. it should also be noted that I go well out of my way to make sure a higher up knows if I get above and beyond service from an employee. :shake hands:

I honestly found it humorous that he was complaining the package was almost too long to be mailed.
I didn't know about the USPS problems all over the news today. That maybe explains his bad mood, but.........

Be careful! Maybe the guy is on the verge of "going postal".

For every unhappy soul like the angry Postmaster, there are many happy productive post office employees. No matter what you do, he will probably be one miserable SOB. Too bad for his subordinates because workplace attitude often flows downward from the top. :peace:

Just the word "post office" is enough to sent me over the edge :x . I live in a very small rural town where home delivery is not available. You must have a P.O. box. Once upon a time, pretty much all you had to do was put the name, the city and the state and it got to you. No more. If the p.o. box is not on the letter or package, back it goes to the sender.

Have you tried ordering something lately? Oh yeah, you all have, you are building a trailer! Many computer systems will not allow you to put in a p.o. box as they general ship UPS or fed ex. But they use USPS address software, so if you put in your physical address, it knows it is invalid. So I can't use my p.o. box and I can't use my street address. :x . So if I can get past the "invalid address" and put in my street address, assuming it is coming UPS or fed ex (or I will call them and that is what they tell me), but my package never comes. Why you ask? I will tell you. Because it was shipped the cheapest UPS with an agreement with the postal service for final delivery. UPS delivers to the post office, with the required street address because that is all they will accept, then it gets to the post office, and they ship it back because there is no p.o. box. I am so angry I can scream. there is no way around this.

The post office tells me "they have no choice" they must return it if doesn't have the correct address. I have complained to everyone from the supervisor all the way up to my Senator with no results. They all tell me that is the rules, or to put both addresses on my packages. But guess what, the computer ordering software will not accept them. Nice try!

What is really angryfing is when it is normal UPS or Fed ex they will chase me all over town, and deliver it to the coffee shop if they have to, everyone knows everyone in this town, including the UPS man, but USPS will ship back my package everytime. No customer services there. YUp I am mad and if I could find a way to never use the post office again, I would.

No, I am not happy with my post office. Since Grant sent to my P.O. box, his stuff delivered just fine!

It was almost too long to mail?

I would have told him that I almost care.
