Offroad trailer bumper!

Postby urban5 » Thu Mar 10, 2011 4:52 pm

So about six months ago I bought a SRC swing out tire carrier bumper for my Jeep. This bumper is class 3 rated and built by Smittybilt. When installing the bumper there were two bracket that tied in the frame and the bumper. Unfortunately the holes were drilled wrong from the factory, and the bolts that mounted to the frame stripped out as they were tightened. This makes it not class rated because it cannot be installed as engineered.

I recently contacted Smittybilt about the problem, and they sent me a whole new bumper of a different design (they called it generation2). So I will be installing this new bumper, and reusing the tire carrier to fix the Jeep. The cool thing is that they do not want the old bumper back, so I will be installing it on the back of my offroad tear, minus the tire carrier (I have to reuse that on the Jeep), but I will be making a swing out something to attach to the original pin for the carrier. Any ideas? A table, grill? Also the bumper has the receiver and I was thinking about a bike rack, or hitch carrier. Here is a pic of the bumper from Smitty bilt.

Free is good!

The bike rack is a good idea, and the swing out feature very handy.

Maybe try a table first, then go camping and you'll soon know what it will be best for.

I' not answering your question but I made my bumper fold down so that I wouldn't bang my shins on it while using the galley. Also, It pulls out so I can put a ramp across it and carry a small motorcycle.

Just Ideas.

Modularity

Answer as to what to put back there: anything and everything! That's the kewl thing about Receivers. Whatever your Mind can come up with/see on the Road, you can do from the square Receiver format. I flipped a drop down Hitch of mine upside-down. I rested a scrap of Particle Board laying around to the Hitch while it rested level between the Hitch and the rear Bumper top. I bunge'ed down an instant, el cheapo Table for 1 on this stable 3 point mount [left and right side to Bumper; 3rd support point on Hitch]. Handy to cook on sans a 'real' Table that trip of Boondocking super-light...

With Battery Power run to something like a 7 Pin Bargman Connector, you have +12 VDC back there for Light down on whatever you mount, or for any reasonable amperage load. I can't find them this second, but there's a whole series of Adapters that are Bargman -> ...fill in the blank... One neat one converts to a Cig Lighter Plug for whatever.

Hold up a quick-disconnect, '3/4-round' Shower Tent bent out of Conduit attached to square Hitch 'stock' Metal once set-up in Camp?

We've got a 'swing-away and lock open' Yakima 4 Bike Holder. Just the very stout, lower swing-away part could be a Modular Table mount or whatever you fancy. There's 'anti-rattle' Pins for Receivers that minimize lateral slop for tight Receiver mounting of 'whatever'.

My Brain works along the lines to make mounts and things 'modular'. To repeat Rob above a bit, you can adapt functions on the fly as you notice neat Accessories while Camping or at the Truck Stop. In good Weather, support that Flat Screen in the shade to watch The Big Playoff Game!
